how to find window manufacturer

Posted At: 2004-07-01 04:34:41

I am trying to find out the manufacturer of our vinyl vertical casement windows. The center one is fixed and the ones on either side open. The outside is brown and the inside is white. They were installed in 1996 when the previous owners built a new addition to the house. (We purchased it in 1999) The previous owners are no longer available and I believe there may be some seal issues so I would like to check on the warranty. The window itself is imprinted with "R Plus WPG IGMAC 03-96", the silver bar between the glass reads " Low-E S/G E2E Laminated". That is all the writing that is on them. The cranking hardware is Truth. Does anyone have any idea what kind of windows they may be?
Thanks!

First option: Open the sash up and look staight up and see if there is a paper tag up in the header. The name may be there.

Next option: There are not that many manufacturers that make brown out, white in windows. Call up local window companies and ask if they carry a window like that. They may carry it or know who did.

If all your looking fields no results, a local glass company can measure, order, and replace the glass at a not too high of a charge.
I wish you luck in your search.

Why don't window manufacturers put their name on their products? I think this is exactly the reason. So the public cannot find them for warranty issues. When this question was asked before it got a totally lukewarm. don't care. why are you asking, its not a problem response from our daily responding window gurus.

Curious, I think you are absolutely right why the names are not on many windows, including wood and aluminum. I don't think it is an accident for some companies to not have this info clearly marked.
I've been frustrated the last 30 years trying to help people find what windows they have to help them get service. Many times I recognize them, and a lot of the time I don't.
I for one like brands that have their names right on the lock.

You answered it yourself I think. The best manufacturers DO put their name on the windows.
They are proud of the product they produce and want people to know who did it.

Okay, this is not perfect (and I have done a bit of guessing), but it (hopefully) will be a starting point.

-R-Plus is a trade name for LoF Pyrolytic Low-E coating.
Listing the coating as "Low-E" is also characteristic of a hard (pyrolytic) coating.

-IGMAC is a Canadian IG certifcation program somewhat parallel to the US IGCC (Insulating Glass Certification Council). So was the window made in Canada? eh?

-03-96 is manufacture date - 3rd quarter, 1996

-E2E probably means it is a triple pane window with 2 low-E coatings on surfaces #3 and #5. Triple pane is very popular in Canada, eh?

-Laminated really puzzles me. Laminated glass tends to be very rare in US / Canadian residential construction. If laminated is intended to relate to something else, I have no idea what that might be. Which takes us to

-S/G may mean "safety glass" which would relate to the laminate as well...is there anything on the window that mentions ANSI Z97-1 or 16CFR1201?
Those are US safety glass standards, but are also commonly referenced in Canada as well.

-and finally, I am guessing that WPG may be the manufacturer? But I cannot relate that to a specific company....maybe a mom and pop shop?

The reason is because most of the window manufacturers buy their extrusions, glass-packs and hardware from someone else. The ones that can afford to have their name embossed in the hardware are either able to afford it or do such incredible volume to demand it.

Just a couple guesses, but maybe a member of the mostly canadian "Wood Products Group"? Their member companies make other stuff than just wood products. Not much to go on though.

Certainteed's "Window Product Group" doesn't make brown out/white in windows so that wouldn't be it....Unless they did at some plant in 1996 and I just didn't know about it. Anybody remember if they did?

Very good point, but another option for those companies would be to place their logo and product information on the glass face.
A simple sand-blast logo machine can be found for about $1500 and the masks with the company's name and whatever other information they would want to use cost about $150 for set up and less than $5 each for the logo masks.

Sounds like a worthwhile business opp for you. Maybe you should put together some packages and drop a letter to the manufacturers. Let them know the feedback you recieve requesting such a service. Put me in for 5%.. hehehe.

Thank you all for replies. Obernon you may be onto something. There is absolutely no other writing on these windows, frames, or hardware so out of curiousity I thought I would check the sliding patio door which was installed at the same time. This had a little more writing but it too is brown vinyl on the outside and white on the inside. This glass on the door says: "PPG Herculite K tempered trempe CAN/CGSB-12.1-M 840396." The silver bar between the panes reads: "Low-E S/S 171" and the date is Jan 12 1996. I live in Minnesota, so I guess using a Canadian window manufacturer wouldn't be that odd however, do they follow same regulations, etc as American window manufacturers do? Apparently, there must be a distributor around here, all of the places I have called and emailed have no clue what they could be. Guess I could search the internet for Canadian window manufacturers. Thanks again.
