Just curious. Given that a window size is same are all types of windows (double hung awning etc.) equal in difficulty to install? Are some more forgiving than others.
how about french door /french sliding/standard patio door
units? And last but not least retrofit/new install?
I'd like to hear a rating from pros as well as do-it-yourself folks.

Barb, It would be very difficult to project how easy or difficult your job would be without seeing it first. There are so many tangibles involved it makes our head swim. I would strongly recommend using professional help in this matter. If by any chance you do something wrong the warranty will be voided. Thats a big chance not worth taking. Even if your husband is handy or good with a hammer it's a very tedious thing to do. If he knows someone in the trade to help. That would be very beneficial. Sorry I couldn't offer more.

I guess I was thinking too simplistically! My thought was to find out what window-type pros and 'pros in training' thought was easiest to install given no weird problems with the opening.

If measured right the double and singlehung windows are by far the easiest to install. If your pulliing out the same style with no issues.
