Simonton - Which is their top of the line

Posted At: 2004-10-05 14:28:08

What a wonderful site! Was wondering if anyone can tell me which of Simonton's windows is considered their top of the line and are their windows considered to be mid-grade or-high grade? (I am interested in getting the super spacer with them) Is it the Impressions 9800, or Prisim? Or, another??? Also, how are their doorwalls? Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks

The 9800 is their best with choices of glass system to fit your needs.
Standard is ¾ double strength – Low-e SC/Argon w/ intercept spacer
Sensor Glass adds the terrained Super Spacer and 1” insulated glass.
Super Sensor Glass is 1” double Strength triple pane two Low-e sc surfaces, Krypton gas & Super Spacer (best thermal efficiency)
Super Sensor Plus has everything Super Sensor has but 2 of the panes have a laminate layer sandwiched between the glass (best for security, stopping outside noise and it blocks nearly 100% of UV)

If you’re asking about their patio door system when you refer to door walls, their top of the line patio door is very good

On that doorwall, would that be the Impressions 9800 as well?

With the exception of the Profinish line all Simonton lines share the same patio door

Simonton 5500 or 9800 - different or the same?

Posted At: 2004-10-06 00:27:03

Experts, please set the record straight for me. I had a salesman (who sells/installs Simontons) that the 5500 and the 9800 are the same window - no difference, and that any difference was only in numbers so that one dealer could be exclusive in the 5500 and another dealer in the same area be exclusive in the 9800. Or something like that. Okay, my question - is the Simonton 5500 and the 9800 the same window? If 'NO', please, what are the significant differences that I as a consumer should want to know?

Thank you.

They are not exactly the same window; the 9800 is basically a 5500 on steroids. They share the same main frame but the sash on the 9800 has a more attractive design and lift handle with several additional points of weather-stripping along with high performance glass upgrades available only in the 9800. The warranty on the 9800 is the best in the market, full lifetime, nonprorated, with glass breakage and they even cover the screen.

The 9800 is available via exclusive dealers only who receive factory installation training so the 5500 guys who have no access to the 9800 will often say they are the same. It’s like saying the Toyota is the same as the Lexus they may share the same chassis and some of the same parts but they are not the same

I should add that I don’t think the 5500 is a bad product; it happens to be an excellent window. But saying the 5500 & the 9800 are the same is inaccurate.

Why do they make "information" so hard to find?

Posted At: 2004-10-06 14:22:21

thanks Bill!

If you all look at the below link for Simonton and choose the 5500, the 9800, and the Platimum, and then compare them, I can barely see any difference, except that the 9800 doesn't have a Spacer System (how do they do that - magnets?), and few other minor-sounding things.

(Assuming that you are correct Bill) how come Simonton doesn't make that big difference clear on their website? Just looking at that website, if a salesman tried to sell me the 9800 vs the 5500 I might be prone to think he is trying to pull the wool over my windows. Their website doesn't even give an idea which series costs more.

I just can't understand how companies now days don't have better websites with more information. I believe that a great website does a great sales job to a consumer. (I always appreciated the old Sears method of labelling their lines Good, Better, Best.) Simonton's website is pretty good. Schuco's website is pretty bad. If I bought Schuco windows, I sure couldn't use that website to convince any of my neighbors that I got a great window. I could barely even convince them that Schuco made windows. I believe that great companies should have great websites - they are almost synonymous to me.

Lifetime warranty RE: Simonton 5500 or 9800 - different or the same?

Note, that although the warranty is good on the Simonton 9800 (one of the better that I have seen) the lifetime is 20 yrs. then prorated from there.

Cheryl:

Not 100% true, you are correct when it applies to the 9400 and the 9800 ordered with intercept spacer. When the 9800 is ordered with Super Spacer the warranty is non-prorated Lifetime with glass breakage.

Bill, I appreciate that info. Are you absolutely sure though? I just had a fair priced, reputable honest dealer out yesterday for those exact windows (9800 w/super spacer triple pane w/krypton) and he told me lifetime is 20 yrs. and then pro-rated. Guess I will have to call them to clarify. I will tell them Bill told me so on this window website that I'v been dinking around on (just kidding) They hate when you start talking about that! Thanks, Cheryl

I don't have an opinion, and I don't think I will ever be qualified to have an opinion. Seeing windows in a sales promo, does nothing for me. Of course they all look great then, otherwise they wouldn't show them. That is why I have come to rely on the experts here on this bulletin board to tell me what is good or not good. Atleast, so far, I haven't been interested in picking a window based on the spacer system. What nightmares that would cause me!
