Compare Simonton "Prism" amd Schuco casement windows

Posted At: 2004-10-05 16:30:05

Most of the window chatter seems to be aimed at northern needs. I'm from hurricaned Florida. I need to replace old steel casement windows, not damaged by the storms, but with my attention on the other rebuilding projects, I'm reviewing my window needs.I'm looking at low-e soft coated glass because all my big trees went down.

Simonton "Prism" was my choice but now another dealer mentions Schuco. It gets many allocades, but one site mentioned a "lack of balance" - I would assume that is with double hungs. Another mentioned new ideas not truly tested on parts of the window that actually broke. So which does a better job in a casement window?

That's the first I have ever heard anything about balance or part issues regarding Schuco... regardless, they are fully covered by a Lifetime, Transferrable Warranty. The Schuco casements have a DP-65 rating and and air infiltration rate of .01. They are approved for Dade County and available with laminated glass. In my opinion, the Schuco is a superior product. You might want to give them a look.

Thanks, I'm trying to find out more about Schuco and now a dealer tells me the that "ultramax Alside" is the top energy efficient window and made for Florida. It has metal extrusions which make it stronger than the all vinyl.

Well, the dealer who sells the Simonton Prism says that the metal extrusions can rust without you knowing it!!!

Whom to believe?!

Jan -

Do not believe everything you hear from a dealer/salesman. It's easy enough to check out the claims at:
http://www.nfrc.org

I'm sure that you'll get more responses from the pros as the day goes by but use that site to verify claims.

Personally, I just had Schuco's put in and I think they're great.

Good luck in your search.

Jan:

You may want to take a look at the Simonton Storm Breaker product line it’s their hurricane window and features tempered glass outside w/ laminate glass inside.

Please post the Schuco warranty for us to read. I can not find it by a google search or even on the Schuco web site.

Believe what you see, feel and varify. Invite dealers from Alside, Simonton and Schuco to your home for an estimate. Look for the following for starters:

- Overall beauty and operation.
- Personal and professional reputation.
- Warranty (the shorter the better... most are exclusions)Schuco: Lifetime, non-prorated, transferable.
- Performance specs: The Schuco casements have a U-.18 (heat transmission - lower the better), a DP-65 (design pressure- higher the better), Air infiltration .01- lower the better).
- Professionalism and reputation of the dealer presenting product.

I'd like to see posts for the Alside Ultramax and the Simonton Stormbreaker with their performance specs. Any dealers, please post.

Jan, Please return with your observations and post them. A homeowners post carries as much or more than a pro's on these sites. Good Luck.

Julie

Schuco has just changed over their website. It will have the warranty on it soon. In the meantime, you can call them and they can fax it of email it to you.

RE: Taking out steel casement windows Wow!

Posted At: 2004-10-06 16:08:59

Thanks for all your help about comparing Ultramax, Schuco and Simonton Prism. I am having salesmen come out, but what really scares me is that they tell me my older house was "built around the steel casements and walls have come tumbling when the installers were trying to remove these windows"! Not very comforting is it?

also I wonder about overkill. I've been told that the completely vinyl windows meet the Florida hurricane code - especially for an inland city where I live. So why should I need the metal extrusions which I'm told can rust without me knowing it?
