How should a consumer use NFRC.org ? Where is the friendliness?

Posted At: 2004-10-05 20:32:18

I can go to the below website, and for WINDOW, HORIZONTAL SLIDER (which is where I guess double-hungs are) and there are just a touch under 8 godzillion window manufacturers. Let's say that I want to compare Alsides to Simonton to Schuco - well I can't in one step because you can only choose one manufacturer. Ok, say I choose Schuco. It brings up two different models (the Corona 2000 Double Hung, and the Insulsash/Corona 3000/4000/Suprema DH with extra cheese). Ok, I know (from this board) that the 4000 is better than the 2000, so I choose it. It brings up this page: http://cpd.nfrc.org/searchResultsCPD.asp?Line_id=4854&mfr_id=559&Product=W&ProductType=Vertical+Slider which I can't fathom too well. How do I really KNOW which one I'm getting in my house? Like what are all those CPD Numbers? Are there that many different configurations of one window? Why do some lines (like the last line for SCH-M-16-00012 sometimes have two values in one column? Like 0.034 (3)/0.034 (5) in the Low-E/Internal Film (Surface) column. In the Grids column there are values of either G or N. What does that mean? Can you bring this form down to a college graduate level? Thanks!

Hi Mark -

Chill out a little - I don't think it's all that bad :)

The way I read it is the URL that you referred to is the indexed page on the NFRC server for that particular model of window. And as you may or may not have noticed, double hungs appear to be classed as vertical sliders.

It appears to me that the dual numeric listings in the column you provided indicate that the number in parentheses is the surface number the low-e coating is on. In a dual pane window there are 4 surfaces and in a triple pane there are 6. Now as for which surfaces are which, I'm at a loss also - I'm not sure if the outer surface of the outermost pane is 1 or 4/6.

Hope this helps a bit.

Mark, You can get a print out on the site of key codes and what they mean. It will be about 11 pages long to print out, but it explains all that you are asking.

Cheryl - where can I find that print out of key codes and what they mean? I looked around that site and I couldn't find it.

Does anyone know what is the "CPD Number"? Is it the NFRC number of the tested window? Or is it a specific configuration of the window (such that a consumer can order a "SCH-M-16-00010") and know what its ratings are because they are all listed here?

Thank you

Mark

Mark,
On the home page go to the left side column and click "NFRC Products Directory"

Now on this page click on the 2nd from last sentence that reads "NFRC Certified Products Directory Code Listings". It is written in blue.

ADOBE READER will pop up with the info that I think you are looking for.

Good Luck
