Triple pane versus double pane

Posted At: 2003-06-24 14:58:13

We have decided to go with Simonton windows and now are deciding whether it's worth the extra 2K to go with triple pane versus double pane. The glass in the sample of the triple pane seemed awfully dark and I don't necessarily want to feel like I'm looking through sunglasses out my window all of time.

Any advice re: our decision?

Thanks in advance,
Allison

the actual difference between triple and double is not noticeable enough to pay for. It's not a new idea, and if it made a substantial difference, you would see alot more companies doing it. The low-e glass and argon filled space is important. Argon is denser than normal air and slows the transmission of outside temp air to inside. Works better than the triple pane idea. --Been in the building industry for 15 years in almost every aspect(carpenter, lumber yard, wholesale distributing of all building products, and now own a carpentry business and working on a degree in architecture) so i give a pretty objective opinion.

i too am trying to find out if triple glazed are worth the investment. i have tried to find objective sources of information and have not. if you believe the u-values that manufacturers publish, a case might be made for triple glazed, but i am looking for independant cooroberation, not marketing hype from the manufacturer. i also am lookig for data on seal failure.

the companies that don't make a triple glaze say "you have twice as many seals to fail". i think that is nonsense, you have to seal 3 panes instead of two, but the middle pane does not count. if it fails, it is not going to change a thing. so i think you have just the same chance of failure with the triple as you do with the double glazed. i think it is just scare tactics on the part of people that don't make a triple.

a legitimate concern is if in order to get the third pane in, the space between each pane is reduced. that will very much got down on the insulating quality of the window.

the fellow that responded frustrates me. the fact is that for all of the "unbiased" experiance that he has, he is probably unbiased, but he has no experience. he never said that he put them in his house and lived with them for 20 years, that would have been useful. even if he installed them, and he did not actually say that he had. he leaves, he does not look through them, he does not pay the fuel bills, he does not pay the repair bills. what does installing them really teach him?

if he had owned them himself, he could have answered your question about the relative darkness (he never addressed that at all) and spoken to my questions about seal failure and heat loss. as it is, he is just like me, someone with no experience to share with you (ie. nothing to say) wasting space in this forum.

As a home owner of a serious fixer upper in the Maryland area I felt compeled to offer my opinion for what its worth. I have a home on a major road that has very loud road noise. Having read and researched various types of windows I decided on triple pane, low e, kryton gas filled. The road noise was considerably dampened. An added benefit was that the room was warmer than it had ever been. The U value was .20 which I felt was very good. The price difference was only $ 50 per window installed. Go the extra mile, you'll be glad.

Hi Al.
I just replaced the 25 windows in my older Victorian home with low-e, triple paned, Krypton gas windows. Have you noticed an apprciable differnce in your heating and cooling bills? Please reply to p_121@hotmail.com....not on here...
Thanks.. It takes too long to find the replies going through all these!...
Thanks,
Patty

I wonder if you could provide a few more details on the triple v double window. I looking at getting into a local 7500 sq ft which has NO (yup, true, true) insulation. I'll not be surprised if the total cost runs to $600K by the time I'm finished. What company makes triples that you'd recommend and do they do custom sizes? Any mistakes that you made that you'd like to pass on to the novice?

Your input is very much appreciated

seal 2 or 3 panes is not such a hard concept, most spacing agents used by mfg's can accomodate united inches up to a maxium strength for you, any window (width+height) should not exceed 100 U.I.
