Another thought...
Let's say the existing units meet egress. Then you put an insert in that reduces the clear opening size so that it does not meet egress, who is responsible if there is an injury or death due to a fire?
Come on pros help with this one.

If an insert will work for you application, I see no benefit (in this application) to a new construction window.

They narrowlines are usually well done and have intact frames.

As Delaware Mike said, they are great insert candidates and the glass loss in a normal sized window is manageable.

The quote is not woodrights. Just regulate anderson 400

How about an Anderson wood insert ? Is that an option ?

You would have many choices for AW inserts.
400 TW insert
400 WoodWright insert
E series insert
Sash conversion kits
None of the above will come close to the energy performance of a vinyl or fiberglass window.
The sash conversion kits will maintain egress.

My number 1 question is, Why Not ?

Had a guy in to measure today for Narrow line conversion kits for all the windows

That is a really good question.
You should research and understand the effects of air infiltration.
I love wood windows, there are three main problems with them.
1. They can and do rot. If this were not true they would up the warranty on the frame and sash to twenty years. Yes they do have a 20 year warranty that is only for seal failure.
2. They literally suck. The AI test results for wood window is 15 to 20 worse for wood compared to high performance vinyl.
3. The cost 2 to 4 times as much as high performance vinyl.

The conversion kits are going to be your best price in the wood options. Did they bid new screens to go with them?

I had a similar situation and went with replacement. I also looked at andersen and i was not impressed, in fact, i was rather disappointed with the poor air leakage numbers and it just didnt feel heavy and solid. The ufactor was also too high ( .31 ) and not very energy efficient.
The andersen tilt wash, although cheaper, was kind of on the flimsy side and rather cheap looking.
Unless you have a lot of wood moulding and a very old home, i dont recommend wood windows. They need to be maintained or else you will have big problems.

Your cost for new 12 new construction vinyl of $8600 is cheap but unfortunately the quality of the windows are very poor.

I would definitely recommend looking at the higher end vinyl windows such as sunrise, okna, and soft lite.

Stay far away from the low quality such as MI Windows, Jeldwin, silverline, and Alside.
I went with high end vinyl and am quite happy with my decision.

If you go,with vinyl for the energy savings, lack of work, and durability I would contact Masterext.
