Why do they want to change the way we get a lead. I thought they did that when they stopped tele-marketing.

Randy I think you have taken in to much of that lead dust. Good one though.

I've come to the conclusion that I should be clinically dead any ways. Back in the early 80's I worked the commercial side of the fence installing fire doors and hardware. The company I worked for specialized in hospital remods. All the steel door frames in the xray area had to be lined inside completely with 1/8" thick pieces of lead. I used to bend it all around the inside of the frame to protect goofy people from getting zapped by something. I used a hand torch to soften the lead and mold it in place. Think I wore a mask, not a chance. I can't tell you how much smoke I consumed from that (yes I inhaled). Hopefully It will all catch up to me later and take me out quickly. Until that day arrives I'll keep pushing this 50 year old body until it crumbles! Today it's lead tomorrow it will be sawdust.

Is there any way to tell after a window was installed if it was shimmed?

You could try a PET scan or MRI.
I am curious at this point what does it matter?
You will need to expose the vertical legs of the frame by removing the stops , removing the caulk, and or insulation.
If the window is functioning fine it is not worth the effort.

It just seems like the windows don't fit exactly right as there is about a half-1 inch gap on the jambs where there is a bead of caulk.

This thread has developed into a troll.

If you are even for real, which I doubt very much, you should have inspected them before you paid your contractor. If you have an issue, get in touch with him. If he won't do anything about it, contact the manufacturer. If they won't or can't help you then next time be more careful about whom you do business with. There's nothing you can do short of tearing the windows out and reinstalling them. I guessing your contractor is unresponsive for a reason.
