Block Windows vs Retrofit?
Block Windows vs Retrofit?
We are wanting our windows in our house to be replaced in order to reduce outside noise and improve energy efficiency. We have a ranch style 1960's home in southern California. To my knowledge, our current (original single pane) windows aren't leaking, but just aren't efficient. We've gotten quotes from a few different companies for retrofit and block windows. Block windows seem to be much more expensive than standard retrofit windows, and I'm looking for advice on which would be better for our situation...

Block windows will have a larger air gap and thicker glass. These will both net you a more sound deadening window but obvious drawbacks when it comes to ventilation options and operability.

Thank you for your response. To your knowledge, is there any difference in potential leakage with block windows vs retrofit?

Not if both are installed properly.

Do you use the windows to get fresh air?
Also how might this affect resale value?

We do use the windows to get fresh air, and I'm not sure exactly how it would affect resale value.

Don't go with block then.
No reason you can put in an operable window in that location and have it not leak if done properly.

Re: Block Windows vs Retrofit?
I'd agree. Block windows will limit the amount of light and ventilation.
Re: Block Windows vs Retrofit?
I might be wrong, but i think the poster is wanting a retro fit window that slips into an existing wood frame. In SoCal it is referred to as a block frame with a sloped sill install.
