All vinyl vs. vinyl clad. which is better?

Posted At: 2004-08-17 02:45:02

My Husband has concerns about all vinyl window replacements. We have a very large master bedroom window to replace. It is vinyl clad. It is two double hungs put together with the half circle on top. He is concerned about the strong winds that we experience, here, 60 mph plus. Taking 3 windows and putting them together to make one has not been strong at all. We can hear the window groan and flex under high winds. Are his concerns warranted? I have considered having someone from Schuco and Simonton out here for estimates, but both are all vinyl. What is the imput from you folks?
Thanks!

If you are having Schuco out, then relax.
To quote Fen Ex, "Schuco just came back with an air infiltration rate of .01 and a DP rating of 65 approving them for use in Dade County standing to a wind load of 195.2 MPH."
If you still have strong concerns, a structural reinforced mullion can be installed between the bottom windows and the circletop to give you that extra peace of mind.

I agree with W4U. If you choose another company the big thing to ask for is information on how they join ("Mull" in layman's terms) their windows together. SOme use a snap in mull strip to fix the units together. This is probably what you have today. Others will screw an aluminum plate on first and then strip them together. In your case I would ask for an "H" mull kit. This is an H shaped piece the windows slide in to fix them together. If done correctly I feel this is stronger than any of the other ways. Also as W4U stated a vertical aluminum bar between the DH units will strengthen them very well. We have also used an Andersen mullion support on vinyl windows. It locks the horizontal mullion into the side wall with fouur four inch screw on each side. This is then fixed to the window. Goin nowhere!!!! Difficult for those who haven't done it. We to here in MN get that Tornado stuff and try to do our best in prevention. Tornado's are actually a phenominal site close up! I got within 50 yards of the one here in MN that the helicopter filmed in the mid eighties. Completely by accident. Scared the life out of me. Just wasn't coming my way. They can huff up a wind like nothing I've ever seen. Although I have never been in a Hurricane Don't want to!! Either way there are some good products on the market. Simonton's Stormbreaker plus window is great. Check that one out. Good Luck!!!

Wow, Guy, it sounds like you may have had a close call! I didn't actually see the tornados that hit here, but maybe that's a GOOD thing!
Both of you have some good advise. I think that I will definitely ask those questions!
Hubby believes that the Storm Breaker Plus would be an "overkill". They also seem to emphasize impact resistance as the main feature. 50 lb. sashes!!??? Wow!

Yes it may be over kill. But price it out anyway just in case. I don't know what the price difference will be. It may not be that much more.
The Tornado thing was when I was a part time fireman. I was tracking the Tornado and reporting back to the county. It was real close to where my son was being cared for. I got nervous and lost it in the trees. I ran through the trees to see where it went and surprise, it was right in front of me. I was concerned it was going towards my son. So I got scared! Needless to say it all turned out OK. Good Luck with the window!!!
