We have had Purofirst as our reconstruction people with our tornado damage. Much of the work has been done and the work itself has been good. Problem is that the contractor is overloaded and does not follow through very well at all for continuing the repairs. Our insurance adjuster keeps after him, but that only goes so far. Any reason why I can't contract the window and garage door, myself?

Piece of cake Shelley! You sound like an admirable young lady. You definately spend the time to study up on windows!!!! I myself would enjoy working with a lady than some crabby old men I tell ya!! (No disrespect to your husband in any way). You can work with your local building inspector as your Liason. If you have any issues or questions he/she would be the one to ask. Otherwise contact your insurance claims adjuster to see what they require. Get your bids together and choose your respective contractor to handle each job. Present the information to your Insurance Claims Adjuster. Remember only give him the bids you want to use. Tell the adjuster that you received three bids and the one your giving him is the low bid. Even if it's not the low bid tell him it is. Insurance companies love to force the low bid on people. This way you control the installer. They usually never say a word. Make sure are local codes are followed and permits are pulled if needed. If your already having work done the present permit may already cover your work. Just have the building inspector add it to your existing permit. Take your time and hold your ground. Most Contractors have Doctorate Degrees in BS!!! So you have to beware of these things. If you feel you don't have the answer ask around!! May the Force be with You!!!!

Actually, the hang up is getting our home loan institution to release the rest of the funds. The catastrophe team from the insurance gets them involved and they only release x amount of funds as the work is done and inspected. Our contractor came last night and I told him that I was getting other folks in to get bids and taking care of some of this, myself. He is going to try and help get our funds released for us. The only thing that he is doing for us at the moment is the masonry work. Looks like the brick will need to be removed in order to get the old window out. They no longer make the brick we have on the house. Either that or to remove much of the drywall from the inside and get it out that way. Sounds like a mess either way. The original window frame was put in out of square. It has been very hard to lock the sashes. Schuco is coming out here on Saturday to speak with us. They ask that both home owners be present. I really wish that I had an idea on what their prices are. The insurance is only aloting us about $1000 for the window and installation. With the half circle on top, it is about 8 ft. high and about 6 ft. wide! We may be able to divert funds from the money we are saving by doing things ourselves.

LOL!! You fellas are such a riot! Actually, Guy just instinctively knows that I bake goodies for my workers! So far the only drawback is that the job takes just a bit longer to complete. I don't mind, though. It's fun to see their smiling faces as they eat! If I could send chocolate chip cookies over the internet, I would!
