Sash replacement verses full frame replacements

Posted At: 2004-08-18 15:43:15

I have several quotes for replacement windows. One of them is for sash replacement kits, some times refered to as "sash packs". They basically are jamb liners that cover old jambs and the new sashes just slide in the grooves. The other quotes are for replacement windows that are already in their own frame.

My question is what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I already know an advantage of the sash packs is they are less expensive. On the other hand, my gut feeling is they are not as good (energy efficiency, durablility, quality) as a full frame replacement window.

Thanks in advance for any information,

If you go back a couple pages and look under Tilt-Pacs you can read the responses on sash replacements. Instead of starting over with it. It had some real good issues for you to see.

Sash replacements have their place, but it depends on the application and the condition of the existing window frames. I used some clad Tilt-Pacs with good success and so did KDH.

I'm sure they are not as efficient/tight as a new full frame replacement would have been. But, on the other hand, I didn't have to re-do all the interior casing, custom blinds, etc.

As far as cost, the Marvin kits actually were more than many vinyl windows. The kit is only 15-20% less than a full window, but I saved on the installation labor as I installed them myself. I was also picky about the outside trim options with full replacement. I did not want to go the aluminum wrap route (used PVC brickmould/sill instead and it looks the same only maint free).

Below is the recent thread Guy mentioned and you can probably do a Search and find more. If you have additional specific questions, perhaps someone can fill you in.
