Can't shut my DH.

Posted At: 2004-08-18 19:56:08

I have a ThermalGuard DH 44x78. The panes tilt out for cleaning but I was having some repair work done on my home and the panes were removed temporarily. Now the panes slide open easier than before but it takes two people to shut them. Something obviously got adjusted accidently when the panes were reinstalled. What do I need to do to remedy this. I don't dare open my window because I have to get help to shut it.

It sounds like the sash didn't get slid back into the counterbalance "shoes". Open the window and look inside the frame down at the bottom of the side jamb, beneath the sash. Are the "shoes" that the sash pins go into shoved clear to the bottom of the frame rail? If so, that is the problem. The sash pins are hitting on the shoe not allowing it to go all the way to the bottom. You may have to take a flat screwdriver and turn the inside of the shoe to release it and pry it up, open the shoe again with the screwdriver, and re-insert the sash properly.
Let us on the board know if this was the problem, and we'll go from there.

That would be my first answer. I see it all the time. Really the easy thing is to tilt your sash in perpendicular to the frame. So you'll be at 90 degrees. The little pegs off the side of each corner (sash pins) drop into the spring shoe. Like W4U said sometimes they don't get seated properly. I usually just open the window and give each side a good wrap with my hand to make sure they're down all the way. Sounds like the window is staying up when lifted. So this means one side is attached wile the other is off. I don't know much about the window she has but does it have the sash pin or the drop in style sash (Like Gienow) If it's like Gienow then the sash is not inserted in the spring chamber properly. I like those new styles. Much easier to remove!! Makes the job so much faster.
Hope this helps you along.

If the person who put the windows back in adjusted the tension on the balances for some reason, that could have caused the problem. You said that the windows go up eaiser than before but hard to shut. If the balances have too much tension the window will be easy to lift and hard to close.
