After, I emphasize AFTER, I noticed the sound change I remembered the trick of breathing helium and then hearing the normal voice soubd like Donald Duck, so some gases can change sound frequencies.

Affect of replacement windows on outside sound

Replacement windows have reduced the level of outside sound, but have changed the sound to prolong it slightly with a slight echo or reverberation. The affect of the argon gas, the double panes or my hearing?

Probably the high blood pressure medicine.

I was just kidding!! You must have sensitive ears to sense that. I wonder if there has been any scientific testing that has detected this. I guess the sound traveling through the panes and gas would slow down and possibly change the sound in frequency. Your question sounds like a perfect setup for an Oberon novel.

Slight echo or reverberation?
I admit this is a new one to me.
I am going to do a bit of research and stop back tomorrow.
Interesting question!

He's not the first one to ask this question, so there must be something to it. The lady below wound up in court over it!

Funny you should mention helium Bob...Argon, Krypton, Xenon are inert gasses and are all used in IG spacers.
Helium is also an inert gas, although I have yet to hear about anyone trying it in a sealed window unit!

FenEx, after your comment sometime back, now when I hear "helium" I can't help but think of the little girl dragging around her argon-filled balloon! LOL

And as for your question, Bob...I admit I am floored. I have done a bit of research and called a couple people who know much more about this than I do (I would say have forgotten more than I know, but I don't think they have forgotten ANYTHING!)...and I am at a loss.
This is really interesting for me, but infortunately it doesn't help you.
Let me see what I can find this weekend.

Thanks. Some replies suggest I'm not the first. The best example I can think of is the "hollow" or "echo-sort" of noise you hear when the wind blows across a length of pipe or when you blow across the top of an empty bottle. Contrary to one suggestion, I'm not on blood pressure medicine, so that's not it. We like the windows, just curious about this strange "noise".

I have noticed exactly the same thing. In particular, I notice that thunder now has a slightly metallic reverberation, and the low base sound is absent.

I searched all over for my study on Sound Transmission Class. I couldn't find them. So I'll see what I can remember. I know a big study was done on Airport noise here in town. I sat through some of the Oberonic teachings. Most of this stuff lost me in a big way. I'm sure Oberon will figure it out. So here goes. I know the studies were based off single, double and triple glazed IG's (insulated glass). The study concluded a big difference between single and double glazed. The double and triple glazed were almost identical. The study was based of Transmission Loss (TL) through glass. They shot the different frequencies through the units. Now these were done with wood frames and stationary units. No operatiing units were used. When sound hits the glass the waves are bent in a different direction. Higher frequencies are more dramatically changed through glass. I think they called it "Coincidence Dip". I know glass thickness plays a big role on TL. Thicker glass gives you better loss. The space between double glazed units also makes a difference. Cold weather as we get even cuts the TL more. So there's a difference from cold to hot. So if you have 1/2" glass you will hear more noise than those with 7/8" glass. The air in between the glass acts like a spring transferring the vibratioins from one layer to the other. Kind of like a drum skin. So the bigger the space the bigger the bounce. I think they called it Air Mass Resonance. I know road and Air traffic fall under the same frequency range of around 200 to 400 hz. I do remember that lower sounds that get outside this resonance range are the same between double and single glazed units. So the thunderous drumming you hear is the same as before. You just don't have the higher frquencies to go with it. Thats why it's a lower scale. So if you want to soften the noise outside go with 7/8" glass at least 3/16" sheets. This will be your best noise protection with standard IG units. If you can get thicker glass get it. You also need to factor in the noise around the frame and through the cracks. When you change your windows you block the higher frequencies more than the lower. I hope I did this right. Oberon will shoot me if I'm wrong. Hope this makes sense!!

I'm out of my element here so just repeating some qualified heresay. I was told by an architect that does work in NYC that the best sound isolation is laminated glass, such as in car windshields. I guess they actually do that in downtown NY. One could see that they need to.
