Kurt,
R-value and U value are discussed on this board rather frequently. I would suggest for an initial idea, use the search feature in the upper right corner and you will find a lot of information. And then if you have specific questions, you can ask then.
And, there is a lot of very specific information on the internet about both measurements.
I would recommend internet searching as well as a way to get familiar with the ideas.
