I can't think of a "good/honest business reason" why relacement window companies refuse to break out material cost/price from the installation cost/price. The only thing I figure is they don't want consumers to be able to compare apples-to-apples.
Eventually, replacement windows will go the way of most other products and the windows themselves, will become commodities available for purchase directly from the manufacturer, the internet, etc. At that point, and it's coming - trust me :-), things will be a lot better for everyone except those that run "good/honest" businesses.
Any comments from you pros?

Mike, if you're looking to buy replacement windows and do the labor yourself, send me an email, or go to the website at the end of this post. Take care

I break mine down all the time. Some companies figure it out by the opening. Yes, we don't want to have you go apples for apples. It drags things out forever. Most everyone in the construction trades bid jobs the same way. The only time it's broken down is when Union Labor is involved. Have to account for every hour.

I don't see it as a secret... I see it as a business decision. I guaranty you that not all units will be available direct to homeowners. The warranty claims due to faulty installation and lawsuits that would follow would force manufacturers to modify their warranties down to state limitations and cause them to increase their prices drastically to maintain their profit margins. The homeowner would untimately pay more for the windows with less manufacturer coverage. Guy's like ummm... Guy for instance... or W4U are memebers of the exception to the rule club because they have a passion for what they do. Many others however, will install a bathtub in a window opening if the price is right and promise it won't leak. You might want to reconsider what you ask for... it might be good for someone other than you.

There have been a more than a few lawsuits recently that addressed issues such as leaky windows and mold and a few other choice topics that were really installer problems and responsibilty, but that named the manufacturers as co-defendents.
The good many window manufacturers are looking more towards having their own trained and certified installers in order to avoid such issues in the future.
Not saying it will be 100%, but I suspect that rather than Mike's suggestion that professional installers are a dying breed, I suspect that just the opposite is true. That factory trained and certified is the wave of the future.

Why stop there??Hey i want safewaY to tell me how much they paid for that pound of tomatoes and oh yeah i want a breakdown of how much it cost to make my pizza including how much goes to the driver. i want a breakdown of how much Ford spent making my truck or else. Eventually you will be able to build your own truck so we wont need the plant manufacturers. You watch you just watch.

When I got my windows done last year I made sure I got the numbers from my window contractor. I found out what he paid for his windows, what he paid for the caulk, the insulation, and the rolls of metal he needed to trim the outside of the windows. I even found out from one of his employees what he pays them to put them in. It took me three sales visits, but I finally got him down to what I wanted to pay, not what he wanted to charge. Nobody is gonna rip me off.
The unbelievable thing is, I've found a cracked window glass in my bedroom, and when I called, his number is disconnected. What a con artist. Some lifetime warranty. I knew I shouldn't have trusted him right off the bat when he tried to overcharge me for those windows.

Should have paid him his price so he would still be in business to service your windows.
