Is taller window inherently unstable?

Posted At: 2004-08-24 01:09:14

I am in the process of selecting new windows. Love the Anderson Renewal windows but they are too expensive for my budget. My current windows are 48" wide by 67" high sliders, including a fixed 16" high panel beneath the sliders. I would
like to replace the existing three sections with standard sliders, 48" x 67". I am told that most of the well-known manufacturers (Milgard etc) do not make sliders this high (maximum 60" is standard) and that even if they did, vinyl windows at such a height would tend to torque or be wobbly. Also, are there any other products out there like the Anderson Renewals? Any comments or suggestions?

Thank you.

I've been dealing with a similar concern

I'm in the process of replacing dual-lite casements.....each opening with two each 70x32 operable sashes (total 134 UI).

I wondered if those were too big to live with in a practical sense, especially with the heavy triple glazing I wanted. I've had trouble opening my existing double-glazed wood casements in that size almost from the beginning, and worried that I might have the same problem with the vinyl replacements.

At the end of the day, I decided simply to be guided by the fact that certain suppliers indeed would MAKE.....and WARRANT.....windows that size. If these suppliers were confident enough to do those two things, then maybe I could be equally confident living with them.

Perhaps you too can be well-served using that same logic........

Oberon & FenX, this one's for you!

OK I'm just theoretically speaking here. But isn't a patio door bigger? They seem to work just fine. I've never ordered a window that big. I'm sure they would if asked. If you find it a hassle maybe get the window with a small twelve inch transom above. I guess I would have to see the house before I could really offer an opinion. FenX knows the frame information and Oberon can tell you about the glass issues on twisting and logistics. They'll be here soon!!!

Now I shall blow my Conch shell and summons the two Gods of the board!!!!

LOL... Guy, you crack me up. Schuco has an extremely impressive In-Line Slider. Their sliders are available in triple pane with a max. HT of 65" and a max. U.I. of 130". The double pane are max.HT of 70" and max.U.I. of 138". An additional note, "most" windows are unstalled with the top of the openings to match door heights (approx. 80"). If this is the case on your home, the entire new units might have to be tempered glass as that would put the bottom at 13" above the floor. You might squeak by as the measurement is taken from the floor to the actual glass of the unit, not the frame. Glass must be tempered if it's below 18" in most areas and that will add to your cost. If it comes close and you like the Schuco product, you might want to opt for the triple pane at 65" and raise the sill to clear the code. Good Luck.

Conch shell? LMAO... in New York.. we use cell phones.

Where does a Minnesotan get a conch shell?

I agree with FenEx, that size should be available and I have run sliders near that size without structural problems.

Good catch on the potential need for safety glass also.

So Guy, how about that Santana!

Hey come one now. You've seen TV. When you summons a God you blow the Conch Shell. It worked well you both answered. See you don't need a cell phone. Ha!

Twins are tearing it up. Did the sweep on Cleveland. About eight more weeks left. We'll see how they keep it going. Usually they do well. I don't want to curse the boys. We'll know in a couple weeks. They got some tough games ahead.
