metal reinforcment??? also feedback on quotes requested

First of all, this discussion forum has been a great help during my recent search for replacement windows, but I still have a few questions. I live in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. I've received several quotes so far, and I've been getting conflicting information from the salesmen (no surprise here). Some say the window frame and sashes of vinyl windows must have metal reinforcements - or else it will bow. Others say if the windows built right, it doesn't need the metal. Is the metal reinforcement really necessary? Eventually, I'll be replacing some larger windows (24"Wx69"H) where bowing might be more of an issue.

I'm in the process of getting quotes for 11 windows:

Double Hung
4 - 23"W x 44"H
1 - 24"W x 29"H

Casement
2 - 21"W x 45"H
2 - 17"W x 46"H

Picture
1 - 23"W x 46"H

Sliding
1 - 48"W x 31"H

I've received these quotes so far:

Home Depot (Simonton Renovations 6100) - $6250, no discounts
Sears (Simonton, Weatherbeater Plus, I think) - $10k after discounts
Window Specialists (Pro-Guard, made by Winchester - same as their Bristol window, I think) - $13k (if I signed that day, otherwise it was ~20k)

Sears is obviously way overpriced. Interestingly, I mentioned this to the rep, and got a call back a few days later saying that the price is set that high basically to pay for their advertising. And they could offer me the "Weatherbeater Limited" window for around $500/window.

I recently found a Schuco dealer in my area. Can anyone give me a rough idea what a set of Schuco windows would cost installed (low e, argon, double or triple glazed) based on the sizes listed above? I'd like to have a dollar value in mind before the rep comes.

Dave -

I can tell you this - having worked for Sears Home Improvement for a while and having sold their windows, you're correct - waaay overpriced. And HD isn't too far behind.

I'm currently replacing all the windows in my home and if I were to pay current Sears pricing (inclusive of ALL applicable discounts) the bill would be around $19,000. Instead I'm getting Schuco for a little under $9000 (Schuco 4000 series - triple pane and krypton filled). I would sure suggest listening to the Schuco salesman.

However, if he turns out to be one of those that tries to use 'today only' or price drops if you sign 'right now' show him the door. There is NO need for that kind of stuff. My Schuco dealer offered full and complete explanations, had other product samples with him (he handles a number of brand names) and simply explained and demonstrated the advantages/disadvantages of all. Without a doubt the Schuco line is superior and was surprisingly affordable. The HD quote I got was for a little over $9,000 for 6 less windows! In actuality Sears will usually average about $1,000/window and HD is pretty close to that too.

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Metal reinforcement is a line of garbage. Not true what so ever. So kick him out of the house then kick him ounce for me and then for FenX!!!!

Prices should bo anywhere from $500 to $650 per opening. The Schuco bid can be large or small. Depens on the sales staff. Good Luck!!!
