which brand to buy

We are replacing 19 windows in our home. It is a custom home built in 1923 and has wood frame in the living and dinning room, with other wood interior molding throughtou the house. We have had 3 estimates by 3 different sales reps.-Simonton, Renewal by Anderson and Milgard. The RA rep. gave us an estimate for 8 windows $11,800- fibrex canvas exterior, pine interior for the living and dinning room. I don't want to get ripped off but I do want to maintain the integrity and appearance of wood in these rooms. We are still waiting on the Milgard quote. I've read a number of emails that do not speak highly of RA windows. Are there other window manufacturers that I may contact in N. CA-Eastbay who sell a quality window where you will get what you pay for?

I happen to see your message & thought maybe I could help.
Here are some quidelines:
Make sure your windows have LowE glass soft-coat is best.
Argon gas is still kind of "iffy" noone can seem to tell me if it will be in the window in 5-10 years or not.
Vinyl windows are the best insulated. But to maintain wood windows in their present form the best you can hope for is vinyl clad exterior with wood interior.
Quaker windows made in Freeburg, Missouri are a great choice.
The price difference from one co. to another can be as simple as commissions. Most window salesman make 10--50% off each window sale so price difference can be commission salesman vs. not.
Also look at warranty and if each window is made to measure for replacement not stock sized.
The only reason I know this is I have worked in the same window store for 23 years, by the hour. We are also in Oklahoma so it is no difference to me where you buy.
After putting vinyl windows in my own home I can tell you that there is no other way to go for me. It also convinced my husband of their appeal, since he started out wanting metal. ( he's a carpenter). I hope this is some help. Have a good day and Good Luck......

There is plenty of information available on the internet and in trade magazines regarding the retention rates of argon gas. The problem is, you have to look for it in order to become better informed, it will not come to you.

Argon gas is beneficial and can be retained in the I.G. unit.

As to vinyl clad wood windows, the contraction and expansion rates of vinyl and wood are much farther apart than are aluminum and wood. Knowing this, using the common sense that God gave us all, which cladding do you think would hold up better on a wood window?

Randy makes a very good point. If you are going with wood windows, choose one with a good quality aluminum cladding, not vinyl. Look at Marvin Ultimate Wood-clad windows. They have a very nice, heavy, extruded aluminum cladding.

I would install the Milgard Fiberglass wood venner if you are looking into staying with the wood look. I use to sub-contract for Renewal and believe me you would be unhappy with their veneer, their miter welds for their veneers were bulged up at least 90 % of the time. Also their overall miters were real brittle. I got pics.
Average, definitely not a 1400.00 window.

if your going wood WOODCLAD is the ticket and i am sure youll pay less than the Rba's or if you have your heart set for the Andersen Window try the new construction Andersen.

AC

If you have all wood openings and do not want to disrupt the integrity of the exterior wood trim, exterior stucco/siding and the interior trim, check out the Pella Precision Fit aluminum clad wood double hungs. Much more reasonably priced then RBA, and alot better quality for the investment than Milgard. You get the real wood interior to stain or paint and the windows can be built in 1/4 inch increments.

You can check them out at the Walnut Creek showroom on S. Main St. Ask for David.
