I really like Schuco windows, but...

Posted At: 2004-08-25 21:56:28

I went to the dealer in my area ( western Michigan ) and got a quote for 12 Schuco corona 4000 series windows. The price was $12932 for 4 sliders, 4 double hungs, and 4 picture windows.
He said I was getting a discount. I wanted to see if I was true so, I emailed Schuco to find another dealer with whom I could get a quote from and they informed me that this dealer is the only one to service all of Michigan.
It looks as if I may have to go with Gorell 5300 or Alside Sheffield windows instead. Any thoughts on which of these is the better window?

Thank you,
Brian

Brian, would you mind taking the time to calculate the total square footage of the 12 windows. I am curious what the cost would be per square foot. Thanks.

So $62. per square foot is Schucos price. It will be interesting to see what Gorell comes in at.

Keep us posted. Thanks

For the record, Schuco doesn't set the sale price... dealer's do. As for a square foot price, I have never known a dealer that sells windows by the square foot like carpet. Sooo many variables. I am in no way trying to justify the quote... that's the dealers job and his loss if he loses the job with no profit instead of reasonable.

Brian, you mentioned 4 sliders... are those patio doors or windows? If they are windows, are they 2-lite or 3-lite sliders? Masonry openings or simple wood replacements? Are they steel or aluminum jambs buried in plaster or stucco? Is there lead paint involved? Are you getting new wood jambs or trim? If so, is painting involved? Are you in a high cost of living area that might force a dealer to charge higher prices? Is there any noticeable wood rot at the existing openings? Are your new windows to be installed the same sizes as your openings or are you enlarging any? How big are the windows? Are they white, Tan, or woodgrain? Do they have grids in them? ETC...ETC...ETC.

I'm just curious... but aside from that, I am making a point that pricing windows online by the square foot has little or no degree of accuracy. That's why I never respond with an answer to those posts... it is a guess at best without proper knowledge of circumstances.

I don't agree with FenEx. I work at inside sales for one of the largest window companies manufacturing vinyl windows in the country. We process hundreds of dealer orders every day. Almost all of the charges to the dealers are based on square foot pricing. Size, grids, low e, argon fill etc.

No arguement here... but that wasn't the post. Your cost to the dealer is product only... the posts being discussed include installation dealing with all the other variables that can drastically affect the overall sq/ft sale price.

My personal opinion

I believe the Sheffield and 5300 are pretty comparable. And no, I haven't poured over the specs and made an engineering assessment.

I'm just an interested consumer that, after a fair amount of research, has become convinced there are a decent number of quality windows out there beyond the couple of names that are seemingly mentioned time after time around here.

Where did she get that idea. Installation and product are a mile apart. The manufacturer knows what they're selling everytime. We are walking into the Twilight Zone on every bid.
