Thank you everyone, for your input on single-hung vs double-hung and Milgard vs Amerimax.
Thank you especially to you pros for your generosity with your time and knowledge. You are performing a great service.
Per Installer’s and Jeff’s suggestion, I pushed the Milgard installer for an estimate on DHs, and he came back with:
12 windows - Milgard Classic DH $5,830 without grids, $6,150 with grids.
His estimate for 12 Styleline SHs without grids was $4,400.
He was recommended by the man (now retired) who installed a close friend’s Milgards 10 years ago.
This compares to the Amerimax estimate of:
12 DHs with grids $5,000.
The Amerimax dealer/installer is local (lives in the neighborhood – office is a block away) and recommended by neighbors.
This would seem like a slam-dunk, since Guy preferred Amerimax over Milgard, and I really want DHs and grids for purely emotional reasons – I grew up in NY and NH, and these are the windows that feel like “home” to me.
However, I remember someone cautioning about Amerimax’s “pocket sills” – that they clog with debris, bugs etc. and you can’t clean them out. I don’t mind cleaning, but if you CAN'T clean them out… Is this a valid concern? I know Guy gave instructions for cleaning out “sloped” sills, but what about “pocket sills”?

I am wondering if either you or Guy have actually touched and felt the Milgard DH window because it also has the pocket sill you so fear. It is the top sash lock that makes the Milgard double hung unique and a "slam-dunk" from an installers point of view. What did you think of the PAL (positive action lock)?

Barb they clean out the same way. Pocket sill drain just as fast as sloped sils do. Don't let everyone here push you to buy their product or at least the one they like. Base everything off your own personal opinion. Remember each person here is just an opinion. Some of us just happen to be on the same page. If you choose the Milgard you will be fine. The Amerimax window I have hung a ton of. I have never had any issues with drain holes or pocket sills holding water. They will work out well for you if you choose them. Plus the local guy down the road will not want to do a bad job near his office. THis would be a bad business decision. Git R Done!!!

OK installer dude here's the scoop from me to you. I tried to stay away from it but I will speak my piece. I have one contractor who over the past two years wanted Milgard windows. I gave in and installed them. Granted this was all new construction homes. This builder does 140 units per year. We installed everyone of them. In my 30 years of business I never dealt with more idiots then I did using Milgard. My jobs would come missing windows, screens, locking hardware and be damaged upon delivery. I had balance systems not even hooked up inside the units. I never had more seal failures in glass then I did with Milgard. I had to hire a partime person just to service all their mistakes. Replacing glass that came without grids. You name they did it. As for them servicing the customer it was horrible. It would take me eight to twelve weeks to get a replacement screen shipped back. I'm not going to waste anyomre time telling my story. But now you can understand my side of the story!!

guy, we,ve had the same problems with milgard. I cannot understand the popularity of this brand other than the fact they are well represented and control a good portion of the new construction market. both the styleline and classic are old designs to begin with. the few times we install them is to match existing windows and usually there is service required; debris or fingerprints between the insulated glass being the most common problem.

Guy, I've decided to purchase Milgard Classic windows and patio doors for my home. Is there a difference between Milgard's replacement windows and the ones used for new construction? And if there isn't, which brand would you recommend for the S. CA. market? I initially considered Milgard, Certainteed, and PolyBau (I did also look at off-brand products). I know you often say one should purchase base apon their own personal needs but given that they all fit the bill, which one would you choose? I must admit, I was impressed with PloyBau but was concerned about their lack of history. Your thoughts?
