patio doors: LBL vs. Certainteed in NW

Posted At: 2004-08-27 06:47:07

In the Pacific NW, Certainteed offers the New Castle XT w/ super spacer. LBL is made in Oregon, and comes standard w/ super spacer (2000 series) I have not seen the actual nfrc stickers on either unit, but the NFRC website product database shows Certainteed as having a "zf-d" type seal (dual) and the LBL as having a "zf-s" type seal (single). Is the zf-d type better? In favor of the LBL, the internal gap is wider: (.75 vs. .50) and it seems that this would provide better sound dampening (?)

To complicate comparisons, data for the Certainteed windows is incomplete on the NFRC website; missing are shgc, vt, and condensation resistance. The dealers do not seem to have access to this. Is there any reasonable way to get this information?

I've discovered pricing to be about the same. ($550- $570 apiece w/ low e, argon, super spacer) Anyone have any thoughts about other attributes of these windows such as ease of operation/ aesthetics/ etc? And perhaps where in OR to see these?

Many thanks in advance...

Showrooms at Edelen or Kemp in Portland probably have them on display, or if you can wait until September go to the Portland fall home show. Certainteed gets my vote.

Nwguy, i can be a little help to you. The SHGC of a 6'X6'8" XT patio door with LowE/Argon and swiggle seal spacer is .34. That number should improve slightly if you add the super spacer.
