Cost per Window - a simple question

Posted At: 2004-08-27 16:32:16

Isn't there a rule of thumb for "Cost per Window" installation of vinyl replacement windows......

The quote i have received what i consider to be a questionable remodeler (high pressure -"sign now" sales tatics) was over $1000/window.....

I am not interested in the lowest --just fair value.

What would be a reasonable range?

Ok... I was wondering... How much interest for a $100,000 loan. I don't care to disclose my credit... or my liabilties... just want the $100,000. Oh... and don't worry about the length of time for the repayment, I'll decide that later... I just want a fixed figure for the interest... how much? C'mon... the lending institutions have been in business for centuries... so... how much interest... $10... $1,000... $25,000 ???? Can I lower the interest if I accept the loan in nickles as nobody want's them?

Thanks for being a good sport... like I have said before... rates in any business... are indeed subject to many variables.

Fen.... Your point is well taken.... your analogy however is off the mark....

If only i had a source of info on windows that is avalable on loan rates.... i wouldn't be whining on this board....

Ultimately, without a trusted source...like anything worthwhile, the answer i seek is in doing the work necessary to educate myself on a reasonable price.....i just wanted the easy way out.

Agreed and understood. I do the same with loans... I research...but, just as you need to sit with your clients and carefully examine their exact circumstances in order to give them good advice and reliable information, true pros in this industry must also. If I told you to pay $400 a window or gave you a square foot price... I'd be doing you an injustice by not knowing what you have... what you are looking at... and what you are being offered to help you achieve your goals.

I truly believe the best advice I can give here is to do what you already are... research and educate yourself.... but ultimately, make your decision based on what you can see, feel and touch in your own home and you will decide what the value is of the products you want. Text on the net can't cut that corner and in fact it might alter your decision for the worse when you find a great contractor with great products and services who sees your circumstances... but you hesitated because of random numbers thrown out on the Internet. Thanks again for the discussion... was fun. I wish you well.

In the NYC area, for installment, removal of debris, capping, etc. I had a (phone) quote for $500-$600 per double-hung window for Schuco windows which is a top of the line vinyl replacement windows and highly recommended by the experts on this board.

I had another quote of $475 for triple-pane argon, low e accu-weld windows (high pressure tactics - sign now -- could barely get him out of my house!) (constant force balance system)

Another quote of $295/window for Ideal windows (old pivot bar balance system technology) - learned on this board to stay away from this technology - thanks guys.

Another quote of $350/window for Alside Excalibur windows, low e, argon gas (constant force balance system).

Of course, you will pay more for the best. Hope this helped.

I wonder if the salesmen using the high pressure tactics ever get someone to sign on the spot. I couldn't have pushed this guy out the door faster. After I told him I need to compare product and price, he actually told me I don't have to look at any other windows because his were the best. -- Oh, ok, you sold me! Then, he started lowering his price which really annoyed me. This just proved to me, he was trying to rip me off. Offer me the best price first & I will respect you. If you have a good product, offer a fair price, the windows should sell themselves.

Ron... that was a great exchange of thoughts, and even though it was between you and I, others may benefit as well... that's why I post here. When you get closer to making a decision... email me... I'll be more than happy to share what I know by text or phone to help you make the best decision for your circumstances. This was refreshing as it seems that lately on this site.... the more you share, the more you become a target for attack. You are a gentleman... and I am sure others reading this exchange will be more than willing to help you as well. Together... your wife will save on lip balm as frogs are easily stepped on.

This was a very informational post!! Rondog, FenX is so accurate on his analogy of window replacement cost. Your location and existing windows really add a lot to the variables in any bid. I usually tell every customer who calls me for a bid to use $500 - $600 per opening as a good guidline to start with. If you have a double or triple unit the price goes up. If you have a small awning or Double Hung the price goes down. There are so many issues we don't see until we go and measure it's unbelievable. I would say at least 90% of the time I can come in this price range. This is based off a middle of the line window with not to many issues. It would also include an aluminum wrapping of your exteriors brickmold. But all in all FenX hit it on the head. Go out and see friends or friends of friends and look windows over. Ask questions and find the product which you feel more comfortable with. Your the one who will have to look out them everyday. Good Luck!!
