Wrapping

Could someon please explain this "wrapping" stuff to me. I'm not sure if I need it and some window companies say they will do it and others say I don't need it.

Wrapping, also known as capping, is the custom bending and application of aluminum or vinyl coated aluminum around your exterior sill and casings. This completely covers all exposed wood on the outside of the window and makes it a finished product which needs no painting.
If it is done well, it adds a lot beauty to the overall windows looks. If done poorly, it can definitely detract. I think 99% of the time, I would recommend it if you are dealing with professional installers.

We have a brick exterior. Does that make any difference? I mean, I think, what they install as the window... will be all vinyl anyway, right? If so, what is there to wrap? I'm sorry, I know I'm not doing a very good job of explaining.

Having a brick exterior makes no difference if you have wood windows presently. The exterior wood casings will still be after a vinyl window install.
If aluminum windows are in your home now, you may or may not need wrapping. It depends on the original placement of the windows in relation to the brick. But usually some sort of wrapping is needed on that type of installation as well to finish of the window.

How about capping the semi-circle of exterior wood over my circle tops. Can aluminum be bent nicely that way?

Yes, it can be done easily. It can even be bent around a real circle top window if the installer is skilled enough.

Thanks for your replies.

So, would you recommend I have the window installers do the wrapping or make it a seperate bid targeted at companies that do vinyl siding for a living?

Seems to me, but then what do I know, that the wrapping process requires experience that a lot of replacement window installers may not have, regardlees of what they may think/claim they have in the way of experience.

it comes down to one thing, how good are the installers. If you have a very good company that uses there own installers and not subs to do the installation, then the capping will add much beauty to the install. If you are dealing with a out of the truck window company then the chances of you having a good wrapp job is very unlikely.
