Any chance we can get back to helping the average guy purchase windows?

We have gotten way off course here.

An average guy's opinion

Tim, I don't know what "average guy" you are talking about, but this site has been a great help to me over the last two weeks while researching replacement windows for our house. An earlier post was written expressing this under the recent thread, "Rules on buying windows for your home".

After a couple of visits by window installers kicked up my suspicions on the worthiness of their products, I did what a lot of other people are doing these days when faced with a need to find out facts; I ran to the Internet. After several hits pinpointed this site, I invested a few hours to gauge the usefulness and found the core group of contributors provide solid information which would lead to better decisions.

Prior to this site, I did not know what a u-factor was or meant, the affect of solar heating, why sealing was important and the better methods in dealing with it, why argon is used and if its worth it, is it better to replace the original frame or to retrofit the window, who the NFRC is and what resources they provide, and some of the sales tactics to watch out for. Oh, and not the least of all, what kind of pricing should I expect for a given set of circumstances, so I can figure out if I'm getting the most for my considerable investment.

This is your site (I'm assuming) and if you want to know the effectiveness of it, ask your "customers" of which I would consider myself as such. I'm going to be visiting another week or so and make a final decision and won't have a reason to return after that other than maybe post a message on the final outcome if it would help someone else to hear one person's experience. This site is a gold mine for consumers, it restores one's faith in a business that can have its fair share of sharks, it helps propel the marketplace to raise the standards and give those who build a better mousetrap a chance to survive and thrive in an era when the bigger, but not necessarily the better, companies can just buy their competitor's business instead of earning it the old fashioned way. My advice: don't screw with a working formula; be proud of providing a phenomenal service.

As an average owner of a window company I agree with RickG and have also learned a great deal from the site from the other professionals on the board. Whats going on in KY or in CA or Chicago or NY is important to me. Not that these folks are competitors but we have a goal to help customers and learn from each other. At times strong emotions are stirred up and this is not professional to some of the posts. I myself have given some technical info that was close, but not accurate and been called on it. So clarity has been gained by me that will be shared with consumers I speak with. I don't believe you really how grateful we all are on having your site. Thank you Tim.

Tim,

I for one am thankful that I found this site and only regret not finding it sooner. I think it would be wonderful if there were Sites like your on additional topics for the average guy or gal. A knowledge center/discussion board on Flooring, Kitchens, Baths, Roofing etc. There is no other site like yours. It is something you should be proud of.

I go away for three days and apparently missed all the fun!
And for the record I don't compete with anyone here.
I don't sell windows, I don't install windows, I don't work for a window company, and I try not to endorse nor disparage any particular brand of window.
I work with many different window companies on certifications and code approvals and the like, so to avoid any sort of conflict of interest I avoid commenting on window companies.

And I also say thanks to Tim, because I really enjoy visiting this site as well. And thanks to Guy and FenEx and W4U and especially the "average question-asking-homeowner", because you have taught me more than a few things and made me relearn (research) a few more.

I'm the guilty party and will accept my flogging!! My anger and frustrations got the best of me. It didn't help that I had a roofer drop a hammer on my head and almost loosing my fingers in a mishap. This really fueled my bad evening. Speaking as a business owner that sells product and installs it. I see so many things that just blow me away. Especially when a customer is told the wrong thing or is lied to. It angers me being stuck here in MN not being able to help the Steve's, Maries and Shelleys. They post in a panic and really need help. We as Proffessional people offer a fair opinion only to be torn apart by some jealous idiot from another company or provider. (I will refrain from pointing at people) These people speak out only to frustrate and terrorize the situation even more. If they would only respond by telling us why they disagree. The rest of us disagree with things often. We don't humiliate or disrespect each other when we do it though. Occasionally someone scratch's a mad spot and off we go. But these are the best posts to learn from. The information received during these are sometimes very beneficial.
I myself really enjoy a little ribbing and fun with the board visitors. If this offends anyone I will stop immediately. I just like a good laugh every now and then. If we could some how eliminate the people who do nothing but complain or step in the way it would be great. Not taking away from the dark side. Sometimes the dark side keeps us open minded. A good healthy disagreement works to everyones advantage now and then.
I've learned a great deal from people on this board. I've even used it professionally and as a customer. I have even started friendships with other Pro's here. I've never met any of them face to face. I hope to some day. I have a great respect for FenX. Oberon, Windows4U,Art and even some of the frequent return visitors. All their input is beneficial to making choices.
Tim your the one who controls this board and makes it what it is. I personally want to thank you for having it. You've created the best group of advisors I've been around! I feel there is no better. Thanks for letting me post my thoughts. If you want to establish any rules I will have nothing but respect for them.
I will now take my flogging!!!

Tim,

IMHO it is the pros like Guy and FenX that make your site so great. Both took time to respond to me. Guy I hope you do not hold back on your advice and comments. You will receive no flogging from me. But instead sending you and FenX a big hug and smile for caring.
