Replacement do it yourself

Posted At: 2004-08-30 16:26:47

My existing pella windows are 35 years old. The frames are fine and I have a lot of windows- 33. I want to replace the windows but my wife insists on wood, not vinyl or even aluminum. I am trying to find suitable replacements. Pella's website shows replacement windows but talking to them is a nightmare. They'll never tell you a price for a window...it has to be a "quote" to do my whole house. I said I wanted to do it myself and the rep said...ah, no ya don't...all that work. How does he know what I want?

The guy wants to give me this "great deal" half off installation which is still 195 per window.

The first one I do myself might take a while or not be perfect but I bet by the time I'm on the 20th one, I'd be good at it.

The problem is, where can I get the windows? Pella won't sell to me...well they say they will but I have to go through my local dealer...who basically discourages me.

Any other wood replacement windows in the market?

All replies welcome.

Lowes carries the Pella 850,450 and 250 series wood replacement windows. Check their website. I'm considering doing the same, even if it's 1 or 2 windows at a time.

Will, Pella is going through a huge debate on installation internally. THey are looking at only selling their windows with the installation by their authorised installers. They have had so many installation issues haunt them they will fight anyone who is not authorized to install. You need to find a friend or relative who is in the trade somewhere to assit you if your going this route. They will come back and check the install upon completion. This way they can be sure they warranty a proper installation. It's a big push for them. Sorry for this bad news. Good Luck!!!

RE: Replacement do it yourself - wood

If you want to stay with wood windows and your frames/trim are in good shape (square, level sill, etc), you could consider the sash replacement kits from various manuf's. They are relatively easy to install; certainly in the DIY category. The one I have experience with as a homeowner is the Marvin Tilt-Pac with wood interior, clad aluminmum on the exterior. They look relatively nice in my opinion. Tney were cost effective (for a wood window) primarily because you can do the labor yourself. Otherwise, they're not that much less than a "full" wood window.

I'm not saying this is your best option and they may not be. You'd want to be sure it was the right choice before doing 33! It sounds like you are considering doing full tear-out labor yourself. But, it doesn't hurt anything to be aware of this product niche.

There's also a site (attached) that ranks wood windows. The criteria being used (and the sponsor) is a bit fuzzy, but the trends seem fairly accurate, in general (my opinion). The old windows I replaced are toward the bottom, which is where I would place them personally!

Good luck.
