New Windows for Home Addition...

Posted At: 2004-09-01 01:59:55

Hello! We are building an addition onto our house, and need to select the windows to install so the contractor can order them. He is proposing to install Crestline VinylCrest 200 windows (which will fit into the window material and installation portion of our overall contract). I have seen several negative comments here about Crestline (though not specifically about their vinyl windows). I keep reading that these are builder's grade windows, etc. I don't know if we should buy windows like this or spend lots more money to buy something like Andersen or Marvin.

I spent time on the phone today with a customer service rep at Crestline. She reviewed the specs on the windows and e-mailed me their warranty. But I'm still not convinced. Our contractor has now proposed Weather Shield vinyl windows as a slightly more expensive "step up" from Crestline.

By the way, windows in the rest of our house are vinyl replacement windows that are gliders. They were installed by the previous owners... that's why we're looking to get vinyl gliders to match. We plan on staying in this house for a long time. I don't really want to have to replace the windows again in ten years, but our budget is tight with the addition so I can't be extravagant with my choice right now. Our plans call for TEN 54" X 48" windows and TWO 60" X 48" windows, plus a couple of sidelites. All white vinyl inside and out... all gliders... with screens and locking hardware. Nothing real fancy.

Thanks for your advice in advance... I'm a radio engineer, and know nothing about the window biz... so you folks are a huge help!
