Replacement Windows

Posted At: 2004-09-01 14:49:06

Wow. We had NO idea how abundant the options are when looking at replacement windows. Choices among manufacturer, model, installation, etc.
Lately, we've been getting a lot of calls from contractors and companies to replace our windows (we live in a neighborhood notorious for it's bad windows), and aside from a dealer we had over the house last night - we have no idea how to effectively and accurately compare one to another.
Knowing that pricing will have a major impact on the final decision, how can we compare one window against another and walk away comfortable with the purchase?

Just some additional information:
(1) every neighbor that we've asked has gone a different route (w/regards to manufacturer, installer, etc.)
(2) house is 18 years old; windows DO need replacement
(3) self-installation is NOT an option.

In all honesty, probably the very best thing to do is to kinda/sorta stay away from salesmen and getting quotes for a week or two and instead, read this forum every day. Feel free to ask questions, visit the NFRC site, visit the sites of companies you see mentioned here, call their toll-free numbers and ask questions.

You're correct, it's overwhelming and the only way to begin to understand it is to become more educated about it. This site can sure help you to do that. Also, as you see brands mentioned, you can use the search function here to view all the posts about that brand, a truly invaluable research tool.

Windows are recognized as being the most expensive replacement one make in a home (normal circumstances), and deserve the necessary commitment of time and effort if one is to get the most bang for the buck (greatest quality for dollars spent).

Best of luck and enjoy.

I'm in DC and have been looking for replacement windows for my 74y/o colonial in upper NW. You are very correct in saying that it's confusing. I think it's going to boil down to how much you want to spend. There seems to be reasonalbe options at various price points. After that, the reputation of the installer will probably be the absolute most important thing.

I signed a contract last week, and ended up cancelling it the very next day after hearing some negativity from competitors. So, even after a year of looking, I don't feel totally qualified!!! But, I am willing to share info with you, if you like, since we are in the same general area.
