Subject: | factory rep vs window salesmen// difference? |

My home needs new windows and doors. I've visited a couple of factory showrooms and various stores and it's time to have different estimants from both. The factory showrooms say they will send out a rep to measure and give estimant and the stores will send out a salesman for same purpose. I'm sure both get a commission but I see the salesman making the sale counting his money never to be seen again. Would a factory rep have more follow through? Thanks to one and all...

They both make commissions from the sale. . . . .They want to sell you their windows. What do you mean by follow-through? If you are talking about service after the sale, reading and understanding the exclusions in the warranty is important. Some include labor as well as parts, (window and doors).

Our factory rep is just that. He is from the manufacturer or factory and he deals with us not our customer unless we ask.
Generally the customer will not be dealing with the true factory rep. So if you are dealing with a "rep" you are probably not dealing with a true factory rep.

Thank you dealer, for clarifying what a "rep" means.
I jumped at the term thinking that she was talking about the companies that make and sell their windows not distribute them to independant dealers.
Am I right in thinking that a true "rep" would usually only come out to the home if there was a warranty issue, (post sale)?

Yes, you are right. In fact we consider that their most useful function.

I see both your points. I expect to pay a commission and realize that assessing, advising, and measuring is an important part of my getting whats needed for my home.
I was hoping that the factory rep/salesman) from the factory would charge less for his house call seeing as the factory was sending him out. By follow through I was hoping that the salesman would work as a team with the installer and would check to see that I was happy with the job (This window company installs and warrantees their windows so installation is part of the package).
I went to a home show and signed up for information packets to be sent to my home and yes I got them but am now being called by a lot of window salesmen wanting to come by and give me a bid. What I'm leary about is that one of the calls sounded like this salesman was sitting among others also making cold calls. In fact one shouted "I got one!" in the background. (I hung up on him)
Thanks again

Barb, Usually if they say they are sending out a Rep it means a "sales rep" from their office. So a salesman and the sales rep are the same thing. They just go by different names. Some companies use professional salesman like they do installers. They are sub'd out and paid on the job. So hence the "Sales Rep" name. The only time you would ever see a factory rep is if for some reason beyond god. We the installer, serviceman or Pro can't figure out an issue. They could also be out there to see faulty product. Most the time a good installer will catch this before it's installed or carry the parts needed for repair. But occasionally things get missed or arise after completion of the installation. So your just seeing a good old salesman either way. Hope this clears things up for you.

I had to chime in on this one. Renewal by Andersen has a rather unique system,at least here. Single source accountability. The "rep" ,salesman, works only for RBA. The installer, only RBA.If you need a service guy, there are over 700 coast to coast, and they only work for RBA.Your warranty is not dealer dependent, with RBA you are virtually factory direct.
The only time a factory rep would get involved, is if all other local remedies had been exhausted, and it is unlikely the local dealer would let it get that far.
I ask my customers to call me,(sales rep),if they have a problem, and I get the service people involved.

I beg to differ Mark about your statements. Statewide Remodeling here in Texas sends out one of their salesman to pitch the RBA windows. If it's an RBA lead, he can only pitch RBA. His next lead he's pumping up his sale of the week.
