Some of the strings are borken and I would like to try to repair my self. an I get some guidance to do this. I also have some with broken windows that I need to remove tohave repaired. I could use some guidance in regard to taking the windows out.

Years ago I replaced the ropes in windows in my own home. Here are the steps I followed.
1) Carefully remove the inside trim. This is used to hold the lower sash in place.
2) Remove the lower sash. Notice how the rope is knotted and placed in the opening in the sash.
3) Carefully remove the parting strip. You may have to score with a utility knife as it is usually painted to the frame.
4) Remove the upper sash. Be careful as it could fall if the ropes are shot.
5) There is an access board at that takes up about the lower 12" where the sashes slide. Carefully pry this open.
6) Remove the weights an cut off the existing ropes.
7) Insert new rope through the pulleys. This part of the job is actually the most difficult part.
8) Tie rope to weights allowing more than enough to attach to the sashes.
9) Close the weight access.
10) Try to figure where to tie a knot on the rope for the top sash.
11) Attach the rope to the top sash and reinstall top sash.
12) Put parting strip back into position.
13) Try to figure where to tie a knot on the rope for the bottom sash.
14) Attach the rope to the bottom sash and reinstall it.
15) Reinstall inside trim and you're done.

Good Luck!!!
