Oberon, I have a question on some glass I looked at last night It has a bunch of black flaking inside the glass. It looks like some kind of paint or Anodizing from the aluminum spacer. Horrible looking to say the least. The home is only about ten years old. Any idea's?

Guy,
Are the flakes actually hanging on the glass or is it like "dandruff" lying all over on the bottom of the IG?
If they are on the glass, is it both lites or one in particular?
Thanks

They are bigger pieces. About quarter inch sizes. All over the PW and each flanking slider. The window faces All the peices are on the bottom. A couple are hanging on the glass about an inch up.

I wonder if the spacer may have been painted? An annodized coating should not flake...And one never knows for certain how different companies prepare their products.
Although companies certainly have used black or bronze annodized coatings on spacers...and it sounds from your description like a peeling coating of some sort. I am assuming that there are no obvious flake-offs visible on the spacer, otherwise you would have spotted that right-off.
Sorry, I have no additional insights for this problem.
But if you find something I would be very curious to hear about it...

If the spacers are a different color than the flakes it's more than likely dried-out chips of sealant that fell from the top of the I.G. unit.

Good point. It would have to be a sealant that CAN dryout and flake. I was not even looking in that direction since most sealants used today stay flexible.

Easy way to test. Tap on the top of the glass of knock on the top of the sash... and watch for a depressing black snow globe effect (very little). I once read, that the sealants can fail long before the glass fogs... could that be a reason thay use desiccants?

Good reply Bugman.
You sound almost sharp and knowledgeable enough to take FenEx's place, (though no one will ever be able to do that.)
Welcome to the forum!

Maybe I just guessed and got lucky.
