help with gorell info

Posted At: 2004-09-03 22:55:12

Based on info here I had a guy come in today and show me the Gorell window. Overall he made me a little uncomfortable. For instance he praised the warranty as the best in the business but somehow couldn't come up with one. When I asked him for air infiltration data his response was don't worry about it. "I've installed dozens in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and all my customers love them" To top it all off, he expected me to sign on the dotted line at the end of his presentation. When I told him no way, suddenly promises of better prices materialized if I would. So I'd love it if anyone could answer 2 questions:

How is the windows air infiltration rating (double hung)
How is $500 installed (no exterior wrapping) for 14 double hungs (average size)with their best glass (thermal master III)?

thanks in advance

It doesn't surprise me he didn't know the air infiltration ratings. There was a time in this business 15-25 years ago when many windows leaked air horribly. At that time, a low infiltration rate was something to really show off and point out in your demo, as it set you apart from the competition.

Virtually airtight vinyl windows are now the norm, and as such those ratings are just not part of many salesman's arsenals.

I know I don't use them in my normal demos, even though I do know many of the rates on some of the windows I carry. The Gorell 5300 is a very airtight window as well as a very good window overall, so I can back up your salesman on that point.

On the price, he's not too bad if he is quoting the 5300 series window. If it's the 5100 or 5200, then no, I wouldn't buy them for that.

Window4U

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm feeling good about the window at this moment despite my general unease with the salesman approach. I found the warranty on the website and it seemed pretty reasonable, although I did find an old FenEx post that suggested it was full of exclusions. The funny thing was is after the guy left I realize we hadn't specificed whether we were talking about the 5300 series. However, we did indicate that we'd want the wood finishes for the interior of the window. Based on the Gorell website it would seem that only the 5300 has these color options. Is that correct?

Last but not least thanks so muh for all your time, I've learned a ton not only from your responses to my questions but all your posts in general. You've been a huge help in allowing me to make an informed decision. If you're ever in the Boston area I'd be happy to buy you a round (or two). You and the other regulars should be getting comissions from Schuco, Gorell and the other manufacturers.

Thanks Scott, your gracious remarks are appreciated...... (And so would the beers be) :-)

Now that you have disclosed the woodgrain is part of the bid, I can wholeheartedly endorse the guys price for the 5300's with the triple glass w/krypton.
That's a very good price.

I seLl the window for a living, if the sales rep gave you that price, you better jump on it. ASAP. AND WAS THAT 500.00 OR 5000.00, IF ITS 5K you won`t get a better price for a 5300 in this country

Window4U,

You are correct that $500 is a low price, maybe too low.

Price should be only one consumer consideration and it certainly should not be the top contractor selection criteria.

Making sure you have selected a quality contractor is far more important than price.

In fact, a reputable contractor sells and installs reputable windows, or they would not be reputable.

Just my 2 cents...Richard

guess I was a little ambiguous, that's $500 per window so with 14 windows a total of $7000

This site is not intended to be an advertising medium. There are plenty of sites where you can pay for the ad space.

There is no way that anybody is going to get a Gorell 5300 in woodgrain and their top glass package which has triple glazing w/krypton gas for $149.
I don't know where you are coming from on your advice Window Man PA, but you are way off in your advice for an installed product for this homeowner in western Michigan.
You obviously have a personal problmem with Gorell and every window installer out there to speak this way. I carry Gorell, and $500 is a very fair price for this window installed.

I misstated in my previous post that Scott was in Michigan. I wrote that before I started drinking my first cup of coffee. Oops.

I just had a quote for 5300 series Gorell Windows, white vinyl no grids 396.00 per window installed which included an exterior 1x3 trim wrap. I had already had two Champion windows installed which I like. But we are wanting new craneboard siding installed also and would like to do it at the same time as windows and Champion doesn't offer the siding we want. This company will do the siding and the rep showed me the Gorell 5300 window which he felt was as good as the Champion. What do you think?

ummm, not sure you're asking my advice or one of the experts but here's my 2 cents...

you came in $100 bucks less/window then me which sounds great and got the exterior capping which we chose to skip (didn't feel it went well with exterior cedar shakes)

we did however go with a few upgrades.. ie grids and the simulated wood interior finish. Also the triple pane with krypton. YOu didn't specify the glass option so not sure whether this factors into our higher price too.

Regardless, after some shopping around I felt pretty good about my price so unless I got fooled it sounds like you did pretty good yourself (I'd guess they're trying to make things attractive to get your siding business)

The triple glazed w/krypton and woodgrain options add considerably to the cost. You both did great, and neither one should feel as if the other got the best deal. Options figured in, you both did about the same.
By the way, a lot of siding guys find it easier to replace the windows, rather than take off the old storms, wrap the wood in aluminum, then peel and scrape the caulk off the storm windows and then put them back on.
I have in the past given tremendous deals on windows when I used to both sell and install, as it would take me a few hours to install the windows compared to DAYS to R&R the storms properly on a large job. I HATED to mess with storm windows.

Our window proposal states, white, double hung, double tilt, 1/2 screen, & low-e glass. I need to ask him about the argon gas because I think I would like to have that also. We do have one fear, it seems Gorell has been in business for only 10 years. They have received several awards and seem to be doing a good job, but what happens in another 10 years if they have to go out of business? What good is our warranty.

We did have two Champion windows put in which we like. Their price was $435 a window. They have been in business over 50 years. I really would like though to get the windows & siding done at the same time by the same company since companies discount the prices if doing both. I am afraid my price with Champion will go up on the remaining windows since I don't want to use their siding.

For siding and windows it is going to be about a $22,000 investment, so I hope we make the right choices.

Thanks for any more input.

First off, all their glass package options have either argon or krypton fill, so relax on that point.
You can't get it without it.

On Gorell's experience in the business, that's another one I wouldn't worry about. The Gorell family, starting with Frank Gorell, helped to pioneer this industry and they have been in the business since the start when aluminum and vinyl windows were both introduced. They previously were the owners of Season-All industries, started in 1947, and which was one of the largest window and storm window makers in the country. A Canadian company that had purchased the company from the Gorells in the 1980's who I would surmise ran into financial trouble, shut it down in 1993.
Wayne Gorell, Franks son, then decided to re-open the family business, starting Gorell in 1994. He decided to hire the workers that had made his fathers business such a success, and kept the town's workers working. They did $38 million in business this year and are growing every year.

So as you see, they do have a history more than you thought, and I do believe they will be around for a very, very long time.
They are one of my favorite window companies, and are a very nice window.

Thanks for all of the info. We don't have storm windows, just needed to replace some badly out of shape 20 year old aluminum windows. I believe I will switch to the Gorell but one last question. When the rep showed me the window I couldn't quite figure out (nor could he) how the weep holes would work for water drainage. With Champion I could see where they were. I didn't see any on the inside of the frame on the sill. Does the drainage work well on them as I will probably be getting spray into them through the screens when I pressure wash the house. I am almost ready to place my order as soon as I get rid of any last doubts.
