insulating replacement windows

Having vinyl replacement windows installed. My contractor was going to insulate the windows, however, his worker began the job without insulating and only caulked the window. He said there was no room for insulation. Is this O.K.?

Pat, it sounds like they pulled your aluminum frames thats why there was no room for the insulation. Usually when windows are retrofitted there is at least 1/2 inch room to insulate. If there was no room for insulation i would not worry about insulation but i would be concerned about the flashing if they pulled your frames.

On insert replacement windows, sometimes there is no room for insulation between the vinyl window and the old window jamb. Caulking is acceptable as long as it is done on both the inside and outside of the replacement window, which in effect, makes a dead airspace behind the new frame. It's no different than then dead air spaces in the frame itself.
Many windows with no interior trim or ones in masonry openings are measured tight like this too so that a nice perfect caulk bead is all that is needed to finish the window off on the inside.

From the original post how can you tell if they were inserts into wood openings or old aluminum windows with fins. Did I miss something?

We were having e-mailed beer in the post below. That could be the answer, or we are so tired we are hallucinating more details into the posts than are really there. It takes less posting that way. We don't have to wait for an answer.

Thanks E-z,
Can you say more about the flashing? should flashing be installed if the window was replaced from the inside.

Not if they were inserts. By that i mean if you had wood windows or aluminum block frames in wood openings then that opening has always been flashed.
