Price for Clifford Windows

Posted At: 2004-09-08 17:21:24

Hello'
I'm in the Chicago area and just got a quote on Clifford replacement windows. Custom fit windows with an average size of 30x70in. They are double hung, LowE2 solar glass, double pane(1/8th inch thick), filled with 98% Argon, multu-chambered, 100% PVC vinyl, fusion welded sash, tilt in for cleaning, and vinyl cap around outside windows.
Lifetime warranty-transferable.

They come to about $775/ea. installed (I'm doing about 20)
Is this an outrageous price, or is this good?

I'm having Sears quote a price tonight.
Thanks, I appreciate any insight.

I too, am in the Chicago area and coincidentally have sold windows for Sears. I'd lay dollars to doughnuts that Sears will be even more expensive than Clifford. And to me, the Clifford price sounds very high for what you've described. I'm in the process of having Schuco windows installed (first four went in today) for considerably less than what you're talking about, and the installer has decades of experience and handles other top brands too. My suggestion would be to look further - there are better windows available for less $$.

Sold for Sears, but using Schuco!?

Art,
Thanks for responding. What do you know about the Sears product that you, after having worked for them, are going with another brand? What makes Schuco better, other than price? AND HOW MUCH CHEAPER per window????

Thanks...........Lisa

First let me state that Sears is not unscrupulous, deceptive nor anything like that. High pressure? YES! Unethical? NO. However, the window that both Sears and Home Depot use is a Simonton window that can be purchased for a lot LESS from a Simonton direct dealer. Simonton is a decent mid-range window that both Sears and Home Depot charge a LOT of $$ for.

In my particular case, if I had gone through Sears the cost for my job would be in the $19,000 area and Home Depot would have been less, but not by a whole lot. I was able to find a dealer that has decades of experience, handles Schuco and a few other top brands and isn't trying to get rich off my job alone. I'm currently paying under $9,000 for the job and, after watching the first 4 being installed today, have absolutely no doubt that his years of experience are giving me a superb installation. Why Schuco? I'd suggest using the Search function to look up Schuco and carefully read the posts from the knowledgeable pros on this site.

Further questions? Just ask. Hope this helps - BTW - Was I right about the pricing?

Art makes some very valid points. I know people have to eat. I just can't understand the mark up with the Sears window. I know there are some sale people out there making huge bank selling for Sears. Art I know you can probably thing of a couple people driving the Beamers and Lexus! I guess I just run my ship in a different way. I can't knock what they do though. They keep selling windows and that's all that matters. It works for them! I think the big thing for me. If some thing goes wrong the buck stops in my face. I have to live with it and make it right. If I don't it goes against me and I take it personally. I'm also not sitting on a billion dolars either. If things go crazy for a HD or Sears job. Theres always someone at the top to just wipe the slate clean. They have the power to make it right. I don't know if they always do! I really do respect the guy that can sell a $200 window for $1000. Only in America!

RE: Where can I find a Schuco dealer in Chicago - anyone heard of Gorell Windows ?

Where can I find a dealer in the Chicago area that deals with Schucco windows....I have had quotes from Both Sears & Home Depot - both were obnoxious on the Simonton windows - I also had a quote on Gorell windows from another dealer - anyone know anything about Gorell? The quote I got was much less then the Simonton and seems like a great window.

Debbie -

I understand your frustration as I went through it myself. I'm in the S/W Chicago suburbs and I was fortunate enough to come across a Schuco dealer (I may be wrong but I think there are only two in Illinois), that wasn't low pressure but absolutely NO pressure. He also handles Gorell and a few others.

My Schucos are now installed (just a few little things to wrap up tomorrow) and they are BEAUTIFUL! I liked them from the get-go and they're growing on me even more.

Anyway, his name is Dave and his numbers are: 1-877-677-6629 or 1-217-424-8900 - the first one is the toll-free number.

Good luck.

If I were a vinyl window shopper (I'm not), and was unable to spend time using the Search feature, I'd bookmark these two links as a good starting point and save myself some time:
