Capping

Posted At: 2004-09-11 13:32:12

We are having replacement windows in today. He started yesterday and capped most of the windows. Originally the company said they would replace any wood that needed it before capping, but they came on a day when they were not too so we were not home and they had most capped before we got here. I am concerned that some wood needed replaced before the capping that did not get done and also when they are capped do they normally nail them into to the trim on the viewable part. I think it looks funny to have a slight bend were the nails are in the capping. Maybe there is no other way. Also they have not caulked yet so there are gaps in some of the capped areas were the sides meet the sill part. Is this normal or did this installer just not measure properly> Any help would be appreciated. We do not pay until we are satisfied= so far i think the capping is ugly.

Bummer,

I would make them do it right. They told you they would replace rotten wood, then is should have been done. Nothing makes me boil faster than contractors that lie, cheat and try to make money the sloppy way.

Good installers would keep their word on wood replacement. The only way to know is by tearing it off. There shouldn't be any dents where they nail. Maybe a slight dent but not much more. The wrap should fit the wood nice and snug. Nails should be put where they will be non-conspicuous. If they are in the face they should have some caulk around it. All seems need to be caulked. There should be no visible cracks any where. Just make sure they don't caulk the weep holes shut.
