Replacing sidelights

Posted At: 2004-09-11 21:21:58

Does anyone know how I can find out who made my front door sidelights? I want to replace a sidelight ,which is tempered glass but I don't know where to get the replacement. The window is approximately 71/8" wide by 64" long. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Rick, Are you looking to replace the entire side light unit or just the glass? If you want to change the unit. You may want to re-evaluate. Not a fun job at all. If you have a continuous header and sill it's almost impossible.

If you just need to remove the glass. Thats easy, sometimes. You start on the inside by removing your stops. These are the little strips of wood going around the glass. Be very careful not to break them. They are usually installed with small pin nails. You may or may not have a bottom piece. If you don't then it's usually inside a plastic boot. No problem just be patient on removal. It's best having two people doing this if you've never done it. Ounce you've removed your stops and any protruding nails. Get a putty knife and a utility knife. The person on the inside makes aure the glass doesn't fall in. The outside person cuts the seal between the glass and frame. Start at the top and work down. Try and free up the top so you can push the glass in and cut downward. Just slowly push the glass in as you cut the sealant. When you get to the bottom just cut it away with your knife. Use the utility knife for a sharper edge where needed. When installing the new piece of glass just use clear silicone. Make sure you scrap the old stuff away before setting the new one. You can order the glass from any local glass maker. Good Luck!!!
