Frame depth

Is a window with a greater frame depth better than one with a smaller depth? Why would this be? Are wood windows thicker and thus, would require a greater frame depth? Thanks.

Hey Steve, nfrc.org has a lot of ratings on different windows so they should have all the info about their performance but i really do not think they have that better of performance edge. I do know that the 3 1/4 frame is made for the old wood double hung replacements because that is the jamb size and the 2 3/4 is better on an aluminum retrofit because it leaves more area uncovered on a sheetrock return working better for blinds and sill area.

The windows I'm talking about are Silver Line 2900 Series Single Hung. They are 2 11/16 frame depth (very narrow, right). Is this because they are 100% vinyl?

I am also looking at Andersen 200 Series Narroline. They are about 5 inches in frame depth and they are vinyl clad wood frame windows. The sill outside slopes downward for the rain. The Silver Lines don't have much of an outside sill as they are very thin. The Andersens seem much sturdier, but not sure if that means they are better.

If you are going for the wood look the 200 series is a very economic way of achieving that. If you want the interior white i think vinyl is the way to go. I do not know silverline it sounds like an east coast window i am in Northern California however from a lot of postings i gather that Schuco Windows is a really good window in the east and midwest. And the thickness of a window is not indicative of what brand there are.
