Experts help on 9Ft. Triple panel door wall replacement

Posted At: 2004-09-14 20:11:22

Along with my window search, I will also be needing an aluminum doorwall replaced. It is a 9FT. center opening 3 panel and many companies can not accomadate me with another triple panel door. Any suggestions? I am interested in a smooth operating, high quality door preferably with super spacer and a good locking system. I am trying to avoid any with intercept spacer. I was interested in Schuco, but they could not provide this size. They offered a 2 panel Royal door instead(never heard of it and not sure if it is good and it had intercept spacer). Also checked out Gorell (which I really had my heart set on) but they can only make a 3 panel end opening and it also has intercept spacer. I would like to keep a center opening. Some places have told me that they can make a 9ft 2 panel door and others say it would be too heavy of a door. Any brands to suggest or any advice on this portion of my window shopping craziness??? Thanks in advance. Cheryl

Cheryl,

You may have to get a wood door. Marvin makes a standard 3-panel 9' door (and a 4-panel 16' door); it will be pretty expensive but at least it will be structurally sound.

Cheryl,

Don't get hung up on a particular spacer if you find the door you want and everything else about the door works for you.

SuperSpacer is a good system, but it isn't so mush better than other systems that you need to say no to a particular product simply because of the spacer...I will clarify that somewhat. If you live in a severe weather climate, then I would recommend that you stay with a warm-edge spacer and avoid aluminum. If you live in a mild to mild-moderate climate then even the aluminum spacer is not the "evil" that some folks suggest.
And when applying SuperSpacer, like Intercept, it is very important that the manufacturer follow the manufacturers guidelines to ensure that the product performs as advertised.
A bit of trivia, many of the comparisons between spacers that the various companies like to tout are made using glass/spacer without sash assembly. But the DoE, IOC, and other associated "expert" testing and evaluation folk generally suggest that the IGU be tested alone (no sash) and in the final sash/frame arrangement to compare performance values and to determine more accurately the potential field performance of the product.
People may be surprised at how much difference there can be in the performance comparison of an IGU with and without the sash, but as I mentioned, a warm edge spacer is generally better especially in a severe climate.

Intercept can work well, when manufactured to the original specifications of PPG - using a stainless "inner support" (for example) rather than the tin-coat steel that many manufacturers use and staying within the manufacturers guidelines.

Good luck in your search.

Btw, look for multipoint locking systems - they have become quite common and most of the major manufacturers now have them.

Are you looking for a wood interior unit or an all vinyl unit? If you'd like check out the Kolbe -kolbe website. They make it in both products. www.kolbe-kolbe.com

Opps, let me try this again. I was looking into a vinyl door. I did have a Kolbe dealer out from my area at one point, but, they only dealt with the Kolbe-Kolbe wood windows. I was looking for the Masterpiece 7500. I don't know of another dealer around here (Metro Detroit area).

Alternate suggestion. You could also install a standard 6' patio door with an 18" sidelight on each end if not opposed to the idea. It gives an elegant look and allows for creative window treatments. This would allow you to use any manufacturer that you may have your heart set on. Just a thought.

Right how we do not have any dealers in the Detroit area. Our closest currently are Rochester NY and Madison WI. You local Kolbe dealer can purchase a vinyl Inspiration seeries patio door from Kolbe-Kolbe. It is only available in a white or beige interior though. No woodgrains at the moment.

Thanks for your response. Yes, Simonton is one of the companies that I thought about for window and door quotes, but just never got to them. If I want their top door, which would I get? Also, I noticed that they have rollformed screens. Isn't it better to have extruded? Thanks, Cheryl

Cheryl:

When it comes to the 9ft door it is only available in their top of the line door and this is the exact same door in all the series that Simonton makes. The door come with a roll formed screen but it is heavy and good quality.

With their windows the best window in each line ( the 9800, 7500, 6500, or 5500 ) the extruded screen frame is standard. In some of their less expensive windows you can upgrade the screen frame to extruded.
