what kind of installation guarantee to expect?

Posted At: 2004-09-17 04:15:07

I am having a set of Anderson French doors installed along with 2 sidelights, they will be mulled together at my house. The installer will be the guy home depot sent out originally, but who wasn't able to do it because the measuring guy and the store had not given the actual installer the correct info. I decided to go thru the installer directly. He is a subcontractor for company HOme Dept farms its installs to. He has give me a proposal that states that work is to be "completed in a workmanlike manner according to standard practices".

There is a possibility he may have to change the header to accomodate the 2 extra inches that the new door is wider than the old.

He says he has 1,000,000 in liability and work comp. Says you need it these days and it is required when you do work for the depot (which I beleive). He is NOT doing this thru the Depot, but as my direct hire. What info should I require from him, what guarantee can I ask for?

Thanks

Well Cindy, Just like anything you shake the dice. You can get references from him and scope it out that way. Call the BBB and check his company out. I would surely find out if HD gave their graces to do this side work. HD usually frowns on this. Now because he's really HD's installer he should be good with insurance. I would not pay him until he's done and your happy. Make sure he pulls the proper permit to do the work from your local city hall. He will then be responsible not only to you. He will be responsible to the city. They keep good track of bad people. Have him give you at least a five year warranty for no leaks and poor craftsmanship. These would be the only real issues. Good Luck!!!!!
