Installation

I have read on this board that installation is almost more important than the window. My husband is rather handy and wants to install them himself. Any advice would be very appriciated.

I'd suggest he carefully reads the manufacturer's recommendations first to avoid any potential warranty issues. Also, the company that runs this site has an instructional video available. I haven't seen it, but might be worth checking out. Good Luck.

Dawn --

My wife and I are having a new house built, and we just had our windows installed. I decided to hire installers to "set" the windows (square, level, and shim them), but I did all the rest -- i.e. taping, insulating, etc.

I am a fairly handy person as well, but decided that having someone set the windows was worth the relatively minimal cost ($900 for 32 windows, in my case). There are large "suction cup" type tools that the guys use to hold the windows, and it is really a two-person job -- particularly for large windows, or for windows on a second floor. If all you have are a few small, first-floor windows, then I don't think it would be all that hard. Otherwise, you might consider having someone set them, and then do all the sealing / insulating yourself.

In our case, we bought Marvin windows, and Marvin's website has very detailed videos you can watch online, which detail a window install from start to finish (along with FenEx's idea of getting the instructional video from the company that runs this site).

Hope this helps --

Steve

Even with the video there are a lot of tiny things even installers miss. Depending on the type of window you are doing will make a big difference. Double and single hung units will be much easier than sliders or crank outs. As Steve stated we use glass cups for lifting and setting windows. Having certain tools (My wife calls me Tim The Tool Man) for the job help it along. Make sure you follow the manufacturers warranty as FenX stated. This will really kick you in the rear end if not followed. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for all of your suggestions. The warranty being voided is a big concern to watch for. but, like one of the posts stated there are a lot of things even the professionals miss. That is why he wants to do it himself.
