Gorell Quote, Angie's List

Posted At: 2004-09-21 17:04:12

After weeks of reviewing the discussions on this board, I began soliciting quotes for replacement windows. I have 9 openings with 11 total windows, getting full screens in all, bathroom has obscured glass. We have a 54 year old house with the original steel windows. It came down to Alside Excalibur, Gorell 5300, and Seaway (Ovation, I think). We used Angie's List to find a highly rated contractor. For those who don't know, Angie's List is a subscriber service rating services such as plumbers, accountants, repairmen, etc. Companies cannot pay to be rated, nor can they advertise on the list. Only customers who have had actual work done can rate the companies, so I felt confident we were making an honest effort at getting a good contractor. Much better than choosing out of the Yellow Pages, anyway.

Anyway, the quotes came down like this:
Alside: $4000
Seaway: $4300
Gorell 5300: $4900

Even though it's a little more, based on what I could find, the Gorell seems to be the best window, given that I couldn't find anything at all on the Seaway windows (even their company website is useless). So we've placed the order for the Gorell, and should get them in the next 5 weeks or so. How did I do?

Thanks for a very interesting post. Never heard of Angies list here but what a good idea! Hope it grows and spreads to my area. Maybe finally we can have a consumer based decision tool.

What do you think THIS site is "nonameplease",,, chopped liver? A lot of consumers give advice to other consumers here.

I do agree that finding more ways to educate yourself is a good thing though.

Angies List is a commercial venture. ( ADVERTISEMENT! )
It's not free. It costs $59 a year to be a member.

There are many ways for FREE to become educated on making a well informed window purchase, such as the site you are on and it's sister site, http://www.vinyl-replacement-windows.com

SHOP SMART! YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY SOMEONE FOR "ADVICE".

Just to clarify...

I wasn't advertising for Angie's List above, just explaining the service for those who don't have it in their area. I even said it was a subscription service. Basically, I was just trying to say I had worked hard to find a quality local contractor/installer with a good reputation and work history. Angie's List merely rates the service of companies, not necessarily the quality of the actual product. As has been mentioned here numerous times, the best windows are worthless with a poor installation, and for me, this service helped in this area.

In fact, I used this website as a primary source of information about which windows to choose. My intent was never to discredit this website, or lead others to do so. I guess I wasn't explicit enough in thanking posters like Window4U in helping me to make my decision. This site was a huge resource for me, and I greatly appreciate those who comment here.

I hate to ask again, but did I do okay on my quote?

Sorry Indy, I didn't see in my haste that you stated it was a subscription service. My bad.

No problem...

I just wanted to be sure you know I'm not advertising for them, as I know that kind of thing can be a problem for sites like this. I have no interest in their business, other than being a satisfied customer. When I moved to a new city, I had no idea where to turn for repairs, etc. other than the phone book. This service gives me at least some piece of mind, much like the advice I received from this site.

There are a lot of small companies that do great work, a lot of large companies that do poor work, and lots of companies in between. Anything consumers can do to educate themselves is a good thing. That's why Tim's site here is so valuable. I know I feel I made a much better decision because of it. To top it off, it's made me that much more excited about my new windows, knowing I'm getting good windows from a good company (Gorell) and at what seems to be a fair price.

This site is for windows and Angies list has lots of other catagories. You seem to be very critical of my posts.

Indy, Your decision to go with Gorell is the right choice for those you looked at as far as I am concerned. It's a really nice window, and you didn't do too bad on price either. There are a lot of people paying hundreds more per window than you are and getting far less. I know you will love your windows and be very happy with them.
Sorry again for my misunderstanding of your previous post. I should have slowed down and read a little more carefully instead of rushing to judgement on your intent. Thanks for being so gracious and not hammering me!

Thanks for the feedback on the quote. I know you guys have to look out for that stuff, but really, I just think it's a great company for finding local contractors. Thanks again.

I have heard about Angie's List from relatives in Florida, and they mentioned it costs money per year, but I have found what I think an ideal solution called At Your Service, (www.TrustAYS.com). We have used them several times and they are a FREE service and they guarantee the work as well as follow up after the service is performed. They are also the billing service, so if the job is not done right, you don't pay them and they don't pay the contractor till its done right. It is free because the Contractors give them a discount due to the volume of work. I do know this for a fact as when I first used them, I had my wife call and ask them their rates and it was the same.

Whatelse can I say about them? You can request multiple estimates, the estimates are free, they are available anytime by phone, etc.

I know we all have good and bad experiences with companies, but I do highly recommend this company. I think ACE Hardware is has partnered with this company too.
