Replacements and J-channel

Posted At: 2004-09-22 15:46:26

I just had both my siding and windows replaced at the same time, and got very nice J-channels (I think that's the correct terminology) around all my windows. A nearby neighbor just has his windows replaced (keeping existing siding) and has just caulking around his windows.

Questions: Is there any difference in effectiveness between J-channel vs. caulking as a seal around windows? Are both equally effective in keeping moisture out and as insulatation? Is it just a matter of looks and aesthetics?

I think it depends on where you live. I myself always use a J channel around the windows. I think if it's installed right it adds another barrier against water. The top channel will drain down the sides and off. If you have no channel it goes down the caulking. Any pin hole or missed spot can compromise your seal. The "J bead" as we call it, is installed tight to the window frame. We usually back caulk it to the window. Doing this will stop any water penetrating the seam. There are a lot of contractors who never seal this seam. I think water gets in here and goes down behind your siding. The siding is suppose to drain this out. Sometimes I don't feel this happens and water damage can occur. So I make it a good practice to make every void a sealed one. Here in MN the weather changes can cause a lot of movement in the exterior of our homes. So having these voids properly caulked can prevent many future headaches. So I think your better off with the J on your house. I think it's just a cheap short cut not using it.
