Help - external (applied) grids for vinly replacement in MA???

Posted At: 2004-09-22 16:15:12

Hello,

I live in Massachusetts and currently have two monsterous sized picture windows and one bay window w/ external (applied) grids. While I love them and they are beautiful, they are single pane glass (some panes w/ cracks) and the rooms they are in are far colder than the rest of the house. . .Many of the casements have been chaulk shut to try to help with the cold/drafts. I finally was looking to replace those as well as my french doors and the two fixed panels (with the same single pane wood with external grids) on ether side (this is an entire wall of glass!).
I contracted w/ ResCom exteriors for the french doors and fixed panels & the vinly replacements w/ external grids came out nice. After having two different reps come to my house (different occassions) and both assuring me the grids would be just like what I have (which is external/applied grids), I contracted with NE Sash (Shucco windows) for the 2 picture windows and bay (I couldn't afford ResCom's quote). However, when the windows arrived for installation they had internal (between the glass) flat grids!
I am livid - I've been working w/ the company to try to resolve but I haven't got far. They don't offer external grids, advise against the contoured grids, and want me to accept a discount to install these windows. I hate them - they look like cheap plastic versions of the windows I have now and I don't want to pay all that $ for it to look worse. . .We even took pictures of my current windows (intended to be a before) and then the "new" windows and mine look far superior!
So, in trying to work with them, I have been trying to find a company that offers vinly grids (external, not flat) that the company can add to my windows OR a company that offers a like quality product (so not a Home Depot type, right?) with an applied (external, not flat) grid so I can refuse the windows altogether.
Please help!!!! Thanks.

Like Schuco promoter FenEx has said so many times you should insist on getting what you ordered. Don't settle. Here is a company that may have just what you want.

I have insisted! They can't do it because they don't offer it. For that reason, I really would like them where to put the windows. But, I have yet to find a comparable product (and price).
I know Harvey is a decent, Home Depot grade, window but I don't think they are comparable to Shucco. Do you know otherwise? I have looked at their site & had some email with a rep so I know they DO offer the external (applied grids).
Thanks again!

Harvey Ind does have attached exterior grids available on both picture and bow windows. You must find an authorized Harvey dealer/installer since they do not sell to the public. If you need more help feel free to e-mail me.

Harvey is FAR from a Home Depot type window. Rest assured you are getting a quality window.

Your problem is with your particular dealer... not with Schuco. They do not offer exterior grids. If you were indeed misinformed... I must admit I'd be pissed too.

I had been contacted by email by a salesman (Sean) who was with the dealer you mentioned awhile back, thanking me for bringing such a superior product into the view of so many via these sites. After your post, I called upon him to bring this to his attention with hopes of helping you resolve the matter... leaving a message. As he is no longer employed by the dealer, the general manager returned my call. I explained who I was and what I was trying to do... he responded by being abrupt, short and tried to send me over to marketing ... because "nobody gives recommendations or help for free"!!!

All I can say is I tried, and have calls into corporate. Sorry I couldn't help more as of yet.

Harvey also has a full replacement ( not pack ) with a aluminum exterior and a wood interior.
I like the way it looks ( Majesty / SDL) but wood inside does not come primed so I see two issues.
Serious work to paint and Harder to clean?
What does anyone thi k of performance?
I have a Schuco dealer/installer coming to my house in the am - he likes Schuco 1st, Simonton 2nd.
I am big into grids that look real - hate the flat plastic and really don't want to sacrafice that for a bit of extrs performance.
I saw a real nice, expensive home in Westchester that had the Simonton from HD. It does have a contoured grid and it really looks pretty nice.
SO... Can somebody help me out- What do the experts like
Schuco - Why is it so good?
Simonton- double pane HD?
Harvey ?
Didn't realize I could be so confused but welcome the advise of all

Harvey can certainly make a custom size for you. Overall the Harvey window will not have the same high level of energy efficiency that Schuco is reported to have. They're ok but not top shelf. Unfortunately I too live in Mass and was interested in Schuco. As you likely know, the Schuco dealer you dealt with is our only option. I was so turned off by their lack of professionalism that I never had them to the house (ok, slight exaggeration, they were supposed to come to the house but they never showed up). If you're really interested in the best energy efficiency then maybe something other then Harvey is in order. I have you considered Gorell? Also have you actually seen the snap in grids that come in replacement windows? I too was pretty adament about wanter external grids but have subsequently found that at least the models I've seen they are pretty cheesy and not much better then between the glass. Basically (IMHO) there's no substitute for true divided lights but with replacement windows there's really no good choice in this regard.

Not an expert, but here's my 2 cents worth...

I know you folks are going for a certain "look", but personally the grids do absolutely nothing for me. For me, windows are for letting in light and seeing out, and there's nothing like a lot of glass with no grids!
