Two questions Extrusion means? Exterior dark wood-look vynyl?

Posted At: 2004-09-23 16:58:43

Ques. 1--- What does extrusion mean?
Ques. 2--- WE want the look of dark wood on our home's exterior with vynyl replacement. I understand that there
is a warrantee issue but we would still like it for our spanish hacienda look. Any brands come to mind?

Extrusion is the Vinyl frame material used to make your window. It's the way they push the molten vinyl through a mold that forms the extruded frame material. This is then cut to size and welded together to form your window. There are many different styles of extrusion used in the vinyl window industry.
I would highly recommend staying away from dark window colors. The dark colors absorb a lot of heat and couls cause some issues down the road. Go with a tan or sandtone color and try to accent it with a dark color. I know you have your heart set on this but it's a big problem with dark colors sometimes. Good Luck!!!

Thanks Guy. Some of the posts use the term and just assume (which is a bab thing to do) that those of us new to the window-info world know the term.
When you say "accent it with dark colors" do you mean with molding? Are the tan and sandstone light light or could either of them be considered medium brown? If we went with non-vinyl would there be the same fading issues.

I know where your coming from on the assumption. I'm bad at it. I try my best to make it understandable by anyone. We forget sometimes.

The Sandtone is the darkest shade of vinyl I've seen. It's a light brown at best! Accenting the windows I mean using an aluminum wrap on the exterior of the window. Usually the wood still existiing after replacement. This can make the opening look really nice if done right.

You might want to look at fiberglass. Milgard offers a fiberglass window with white on the interior and chocolate brown on the exterior.

Is fiberglass better than vinyl? How about cost?
