Windows and Installers on Long Island, NY

Posted At: 2004-09-23 22:17:22

Well, I'm in the midst of a replacement window argosy and could use a little encouragement and advice. Picking the windows seems to be the easier than selecting the installation contractor. Just go to the NFRC site and read this board to compare the windows. It is apparent from this board and from inspecting the windows themselves, Schuco windows are the cream of the crop. That's great but the local "exclusive" dealer/installer has questionable sales practice. However, another installer who normally installs Accu-Weld (Series 2300) says he can also get Schucos for $100 less per window installed ($400 compared to $500). That said, $400 is more than we can afford right now.

I so far have quotes on the Accu-Welds and Schucos and will be pricing Champion (though this board is dissuading me from them), Quantum 2 and American Craftsman (sold by Home Depot). I'm particularly intrigued by the Quantums because their build quality was quite good, 2nd to the Schucos.

I guess I am seeking advice on a good value window and a reputable dealer/installer to install 26 windows (which includes 6 basement units) in Nassau County, Long Island, NY.

Any help and encouragement is appreciated.

Not that I am the resident Schuco expert or anything, but I am pretty sure L.I. has only one dealer. If your Accu-weld dealer could sell them... trust me... he would be showing them first. As for him getting them at all let alone cheaper than a premier dealer... he needs to lay off the sauce. If you were quoted $500 per DH for Schuco Corona 4000's... pounce on it. For their quality, reputation and performance they will be in the $800 range within a year or two... and well worth it. The better dealers are only making them so affordable right now to gain name recognition in North America as they are new here. If you have reservations about your dealer, email me, I might be able to add a little comfort. If $400 is what your budget allows, you might want to look at a Simonton from a private contractor or an Alside product.

My personal opinion, in your area, you and your home investment would be best served with the Schuco. East Coast- 74% return of investment upon install.

Good Luck,

FenEx

Look at a company called Air Chek Window Depot in Clifton, NJ. They work the whole Tri State area.
www.airchek-windowdepot.com. They did our windows 1 1/2 years ago. Did a great job, went thru a very cold winter with their windows. Well within your budget. Don't take my word for them. Call them, get references and check them out. They're very accomodating. They gave me a list of about 30-40 houses they had done in my area and I went to look and knocked on doors. I urge you to do the same. Don't be put off by anyone telling you a good deal is too good to be true. It is possible to find local companies who manufacture, install and stand by their work, who actually take pride in it. Good luck and let us know..... PS- I have no affiliation at all with them. They just did a terrific job on schedule for a very good price.

Thanks for the help FenEx, Bill and Kenny. I'll check out the Simontons and look at some local manufacturers. However, I still want ones with NFRC ratings (which Kenny's recommmendations do). Any other choices for good windows at a reasonable price?

Window Man- Not to be contentious, but I assume you know of the company I speak, and you know the windows I have in my house? Just curious.
