Sliders or doublehung?

Posted At: 2004-09-24 16:33:05

Our house is 84 years young and I believe the windows in question are original. We are clueless homeowners but know that we need them replaced (rotten sashes, with panes falling out, and can't get them closed without a hammer, are good clues). Both windows are about 4 1/2 feet high and 8 feet wide (yes, they are big, wide ones, the living room and dining room windows). Each is divided into four parts: two uppers, plain glass, about 2/3 of the vertical length, and the two 1/3 lowers are crank-operated awning type.

Beside appearance and ability to clean them, are there important differences in quality between doublehung and sliders?

I was quoted prices for two doublehungs in each window, and for four vertical sliders in each window. The sliders are much cheaper. Why?

Thank you for your insight.

Lisa

Confused. Double hungs are verticle sliders. Did you mean (2)2-lite horizontal sliders per opening?
