1963 patio door still in good shape

Posted At: 2004-09-24 19:51:50

My mother-in-law's house built in 1963 and located in Virginia Beach still has it's original sliding patio door. The seals still have not failed and the door is in fine shape. I don't know the brand name of this door. The house also has all it's original storm windows too and original garage door. And her front living room has all the furniture from the 60's and it looks brand new.

Just wanted to share this with everybody on this site.

Thanks for sharing Jackie. I love older, well preserved homes that were made right. I am assuming that by your saying the seals have not failed on her door, that you mean the glass hasn't fogged. That's the result of the sunlight/moisture exposure of that unit but has little or nothing to do with the seal... as I can assure you it has failed long ago. That's not a bad thing in that unit, as gas fills or low-e coatings were non-existant then. As for the storms, I am sure they will help a little as they did then.

I am only pointing this out as although many replace windows because they have become non-functional, the greatest advantage of a quality window replacement is energy savings. Based on the information you have shared, today's products could help your Mother-In-Law recieve considerably more comfort and reduce her heating and cooling bills by about half while increasing the property value. As for the vintage furniture, new windows would also keep them from fading further due to UV rays. Just sharing a view.

Just a thought, but since the patio door was manfactured in 1963, I am wondering if the IG in the door has a glass-fused edge?
The first metallic seals didn't show up until about 1968 I believe? I could be wrong about that, but it was just a thought that happened to pop into my head.

Hi,
Interesting about what you said about the patio door. Also my mother-in-law keeps her drapes closed all the time so there is very little fading on the furniture. She really needs to update some things with the house, but she won't spend any money right now. She is 74 yrs old and still has a full-time job.

Hi,
Don't remember what the seal looks like, it might be aluminum like the door frame.
