Removing Windows & Replacement Options

Posted At: 2004-09-25 01:46:18

I have a couple of questions regarding the best way to install and remove windows where vinyl new construction windows curretly exist.

I have currently have cheap New Construction Jofee Single-Hung windows in my 5 year old house and I need to replace them (36 in all). None of the windows are trimmed out and use drywall as an interior stop.

I want to trim out all the new windows and realize that the drywall will need to go.

Now for the questions...

The front of my house is brick and the brick does not overhang the window enough to be used as a stop. For these windows I feel that the best way to install them is from the inside. Cut the window out and add to the existing frame with 1x4's so that I will have a nailing surface from the outside to add a stop (no-rot simulated wood).

Does this sound reasonable?

Secondly, the other three sides of the house are vinyl siding. I had first planned on peeling back the siding and using new construction windows and installing them from the outside. After thinking about this for a while I figured that since I would be removing the dryall from the inside anyway, that perhaps I should do them like I planned on for the front.

I have replace windows where I utilized the existing wood frames without problems, as well as installed new construction windows, but this situation is hurting my brain.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In case anyone is interested, I am planning on using Certainteed Windows.
