Jeld-Wen

I went with 21 vinyl Jeld-Wen windows about 6-months ago. I love the windows but hate the capping outside. I really got the windows through my company cheap and cut corners on the install. The installer used a bad caulk (he says has a recall) and you can see alot of places where water will get in. Also the guy coverd up my weep holes with this capping material. Not to mention it looks bad in general because he did poor work with the metal.

Can these windows be modified in some way to where I can not have to wrap or cap them? Or do I need to just get a better contractor? He had a brake??machine.

My company may even take these windows back if I tell them I want a different style. Maybe "new construction"...is this the same as "true replacement"? One company wanted over $20,000 to install this type. I have alot inside that would have to come down like plantation blinds, etc. I paid $4,500 installed for what I have now.

What is a fair price for "true replacement"?

Thanks for any help!

Jeld Wen is the name of the holding company that has many window companies under it's umbrella. Exactly what Jeld Wen window are we talking about and where is the manufacturer. Also what type of window did the new windows replace? Wood or aluminum and how were the old windows removed? Give us more details before we can give you a good answer.

Thank you. They are Summitt-Sierra Series. I'm not sure where they were made but I bought them in Birmingham, Alabama. I replaced double-hung wood windows. They removed the sashs but not the brick mold or anything on the inside. They took them out from the outside and put the new ones back in. My sills slants down outside. The window therefore had a small gap at the bottom and on the side 1/4 to 1/2 inch on most windows. So they capped them after they put insulation in the gaps. Also they cut off the nail fins that were on my new windows. They said this was normal but I could not help but think they could have bought them without the nail fins?? Anyway this window is designed with the slotted weep holes at the bottom of the window...my buddy pointed out to me. Some others I have looked at has this weep hole at the top where the water just runs back out and never goes down in the window. I don't see how they can cap them without covering up these holes unless they drill a hole or something in the flashing. Thanks is advance for any help that you can give me! My company contracted the installer and I think they realize it is a problem. They have told me to talk with other companys and I believe they would actually reimburse me for the windows and install if need be. So I got a bid form one company in Birmingham that do "true replacements" and it was $1000 per window. This company normally works on estate size houses in the upper part of town. I wonder if I culd get it done for $500 per window or about one-half what they said?

Summit windows are a good middle of the road window. You don't need to think of replacing them.

Apparently your installers did not order the sloped sill adapter that compensates for the gap on the outside and snaps into the recepter slot just below the weeps.

Weeps drain water from inside out and should be working. Pour water into the track from inside and watch it drain out.

All you need is better craftsmanship on the exterior and not new windows. Good luck.

Thanks Adam! I will call them about these slopped sill adapters. Are they made of vinyl too?

Also the wood brick mold on the sides and the wood at the top is there an upgrade type aluminun flashing to use? Name brand, etc? He used a coil type I think and did a bad job. Will he cover the sill adapter with this cap/flashing too?

I got such a good price on the windows that I really would like to get the best wrap/cap money can buy. I think it has to be capped because there is small gaps between the window and the brick mold right? Or do they make some adapter for this too?

Sorry for all the questions but you have been a great help!
