span and seal colors for dual pane glass

I would like to know the maximum spane for dual pane insulated glass windows with no seam in the glass.
If a seam is placed, with no metal (i.e. the two sections of dual pane glass butt seam to seam) is there a color for the seal other than black and can you then use clear silicone to adapt the two butting seals together?

An interesting question James.
I am very curious as to the application you are considering.
The largest IG that I am aware of is 144" or 12'. I am sure there are companies that would go larger, but I would be a bit concerned about safety and longevity issues on anything larger.
If I understand your question correctly, you are asking about fusing two pieces of glass together using silicone or other material to make a single larger IG?
If you are suggesting an IG with three sides closed with a spacer and one side open to be bonded with another IG with three colsed sides and ones open sides, it cannot be done. There are several engineering problems associated with that proposal, but I think it would be enough to say that I can not imagine anyone who makes IG's for a living would consider even trying to do that.

Again, what is your application? I am very curious.

Thanks for your reply. I will attempt to add more detail.
The application is for two corner window sections butting at the 90 degree corner. The framing for this room is all structural steel in order to have these large spans of glass be the entire wall space and not require ang support from the window.
The two glass sections are both 8'in height and one 8'long and the other 9'long. The glass installer advises us that IG glass in these dimensions will bend and distort. He also states that the seals around the perimeter of each piece of dual pane IG is about 1/2" and black in color plus an additional 1/4" of black sealer between the two sections. He plans to have a 6' and a 2' section for the 8' piece and 7' and 2' foot sectins for the 9' piece.
This defeats the entire exercise of having the steel as support as the purpose was to have two large pieces of IG with no obstructions. I live in the desert with these two sides of glass having a south and a west exposur so I feel the IG is important to keep out the heat.
My original question was: can we seam IG glass with a less obvious seam than 1 and 1/4" of black? Or can we use just one large section of IG for each piece? Or is ther another alternative?
Thanks, James

James,

Beyond the basic appearance, you absolutely need an engineer who specializes in glass to get involved with this project.

Please check out this web site:
http://www.ppg.com/glasstechlib/91_TD%20134%20Final.pdf
and it can help explain my feeling that you will understand why the numbers are not that simple.

There are other possibilites for your requirement, including glass bent at 90-degrees to fit in the corner...
but you need someone to get involved who can do the critical calculations for you i.e should this be tempered glass, laminated glass, etc.

Good luck!
